Hello, Grinders! Welcome to another edition of GPP picks for the upcoming RBC Canadian Open!

This tournament has been a bit of a whirlwind over the last few years. It was canceled in both 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2022 edition was contested at St. George’s Golf and Country Club, while the 2023 version was held at Oakdale Golf and Country Club. For 2024, the tournament will return to Hamilton Golf and Country Club for the first time since 2019. More than 120 of the 156 golfers in the field did not play at this course the last time the tournament was held at Hamilton.

Tool Highlights

Given the above information, course history is largely irrelevant as a metric for this tournament. Of course, you could give some weight to golfers who played here in 2019 in a tiebreaking scenario or as a small data point, but don’t treat it as gospel. That is especially true when you consider that Hamilton Golf & Country Club has been completely renovated since the 2019 edition.

The updated course remains a relatively short par 70, though it will play 112 yards longer than it did in 2019 from the tips following the renovation. It sets up a second shot, ball striking golf course. That is especially true when you consider that the main change with the renovations to this course was the addition of a lot of run-off areas around the greens, and many of the greens were also made larger. Golfers who can hit their approach shots closer to the hole will avoid those run-off areas and will be at a significant advantage. I will be looking at approach play and scrambling as key metrics.

Let’s take a look at some of my favorite GPP options this week!

I don’t see how you can argue for any other golfer as the #1 overall play in the field this week, and I will try to get overweight on McIlroy even if he is super chalky. I will find ways to differentiate my rosters at other spots. McIlroy leads this field in total strokes gained and ranks 3rd in ball striking over the past 36 rounds, and he also won this event the last time it was held at Hamilton Golf & Country Club back in 2019. He hasn’t missed a cut all season and hasn’t finished outside the top 40 in an event since February. Don’t overthink it in this relatively weak field.
