Happy New Year, Grinders! As is always the case with the first week of January, I have three words for you:

Golf.

Is.

Back.

Yes! Our favorite fantasy game returns for the start of the new year, and it’s just in time, as the NFL regular season is winding down this week. As usual, we start things off with The Sentry at Kapalua in Hawaii. This is a fairly lengthy par 73 track (4 par 5s but only 3 par 3s), but you will see plenty of distance on shots at this event given the thin air and the layout in Hawaii. There are plenty of downhill hole setups, and you will see some BOMBS off the tee. The most important factor is this: In most seasons, this course has played as the easiest on TOUR in relation to par. The fairways are wide, the pin locations are accessible, and the par 5s are very scoreable.

Tool Highlights

Given the information that I presented above, you would expect this to be a birdie fest. That is almost certainly going to be true. The winning score has been -25 or better in each of the last 4 editions of this tournament, and that was even with a field of around 30-35 golfers in many of those years. That has been expanded to 60 for this year. The one defense that Kapalua does have is wind, so scoring sometimes tails off when the coastal winds pick up. We will need to keep an eye on the weather forecast for that.

As for statistics, driving distance, ball striking, birdie or better percentage, and par 5 scoring are the key metrics that I am targeting for this event. You want golfers who will be aggressive on this course, as the wide fairways leave plenty of room for that aggressiveness to be rewarded. Another key thing to note is that this is a no-cut event. All of the golfers will get 4 rounds to attack a friendly golf course, and things tend to be a little more unpredictable in these birdie fests. With that knowledge in mind, don’t be afraid to take some risk/reward options in your GPP builds.

With the general information out of the way, let’s take a look at some golfers that I like in GPP builds this week!

PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel GPP Breakdown for The Sentry

Ludvig Aberg
DraftKings: $9,800
FanDuel: $11,800

Ludvig Aberg of the PGA

In terms of ceiling, if there’s one golfer who could potentially run away with this event, Aberg would be my pick. We have seen him shake off the rust after an injury absence with a return in the latter portion of the fall, and by all accounts, he is fully healthy now. He is more than happy to bomb and gouge it around any golf course, and he is going to hit some mammoth drives at Kapalua. Don’t forget that he was becoming a consistent, bona fide star prior to his injury. I am going to prioritize the Swede in plenty of my GPP builds this week.
