Hey, Grinders! Welcome to the GPP breakdown for THE PLAYERS Championship. This tournament is commonly known as the “fifth major,” but remember that it is now the first one to be played each year. With the PGA TOUR schedule changes that were enacted a few years back, this tournament got moved from May to March. It feels a bit weird now that we just had an “elevated event” with a very similar field a week ago, but hopefully we have a fun event on tap. There are certainly some big prize pools out there in the DFS world this week, so let’s try to win some money!

As an aside, I really despise the PGA TOUR and its use of capital letters. We have to write PGA TOUR in all caps. Now we have THE PLAYERS in all caps. YET WHEN I WRITE IN ALL CAPS, IT IS PERCEIVED AS ME YELLING AT YOU. WHY IS THAT?

Thanks for the double standard, PGA TOUR.

Alas, we have no time for shenanigans this week. It’s the real start of golf season! As we turn our attention to a new week, TPC Sawgrass will be the host venue (as usual) for THE PLAYERS. In general, ball striking is the name of the game here as is often the case with “major championship” venues. Sawgrass is a relatively short par 72 course by today’s PGA TOUR standards, but it will play a bit longer than it used to thanks to the cooler March weather. The prevailing wind generally blows in a different direction at TPC Sawgrass in March than it does in May, so we can’t take pre-2019 history as gospel with the calendar change. In particular, the iconic 17th hole (a par 3) often plays into the wind in March. There will be plenty of splash down water balls as we go throughout the weekend, and that will be very interesting come Sunday afternoon.

As usual with these tougher tracks, I will focus on ball striking and approach play as my primary metrics. Total driving is also high on my list, while par-5 scoring and scrambling get added into the mix. Basically, you have to be good at everything to contend on this Pete Dye course.

Let’s take a look at some of my favorite GPP picks for the week!

PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel GPP Breakdown for THE PLAYERS Championship

Ludvig Aberg
DraftKings: $10,200
FanDuel: $11,800

PGA Golfer Ludvig Aberg

There are some interesting salary dynamics in play this week, particularly on DraftKings with the pricing floor being lowered to $5,000. It is very easy to build “good” looking lineups on both DK and FD. As such, both Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are going to be very popular. I think a contrarian tournament build is to start beneath those two golfers. Enter Ludvig Aberg. I will admit that a little bit of this recommendation is gut feel. If you look at the most recent 24 rounds or 36 rounds, Aberg is not going to pop statistically. In fact, his numbers look very pedestrian compared to the other elite options in this field. However, a few of those rounds were outliers because he was playing through an illness, and it’s just been one blow-up round that has been doing him in lately. Aberg is capable of being elite off the tee, and we know he can hit it a long way. He finished 8th in his TPC Sawgrass debut a year ago, and if he is striking it well, he’s one of the few who can hang with Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler from tee to green. I love the ceiling.
