Welcome back to the PGA DFS GPP breakdown! We have the Wells Fargo Championship on the schedule this week, and this is event marks the return of the “elevated” events that brings with it a very strong field of golfers. It is a bit strange to have an elevated event the week before a major, but that is what we have here, as 69 golfers will compete for some big money this week. Hopefully, we can win some big money in DFS as well!

As we transition to this new week, Quail Hollow in North Carolina will be the host venue for the Wells Fargo Championship. As a starting point, we need to be careful with course history here. This tournament was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic. Quail Hollow also did not host in 2017 as it prepared to host the PGA Championship or in 2022 as it prepared to host the Presidents Cup. Thanks to those events, this course looks quite different these days. Many renovations were done in preparation for major championship golf, so this course is playing with more bite now as a lengthy par 71 layout. Driving distance and strokes gained off the tee are very important at this event, and multiple golfers are on record stating how important off the tee game is here. There are a lot of long par fours, so I will also look at players who are good with their mid to long irons. Good current form and some course history is a nice bonus, but make sure you ignore the data from 2017 and 2022 since Quail Hollow did not host in those years.

Rory McIlroy

I do like some of the value golfers quite a bit this week, so that is allowing me to get more exposure to the top of the board. In those lineups, I like Rory McIlroy the most. His game is an impeccable fit for Quail Hollow, as his ability off the tee should help him shine over the field. He also carried Shane Lowry to victory in the team event in New Orleans a few weeks ago. It feels like this could be a spot in the season where we see Rory contend again quite often. He finished third at the Valero Texas Open a month ago, which is another event where driving distance is a big indicator of success. McIlroy leads this field in strokes gained off the tee over whatever reasonable-term time metric you want to use, and he won here in 2021.
