Welcome, golf fans! We have the final event of the regular season on tap for this week, with the FedExCup Playoffs beginning next week. It should be an action packed week of golf with a lot of movement on the leaderboard.

As for this week’s event, we can expect a birdie fest at Sedgefield Country Club for the Wyndham Championship. This is a relatively easy par 70 course, as it has played as one of the easier par 70 tracks on the PGA TOUR for the last several years. The winning score has been -20 or better here in seven of the last eight editions. Scoring is the name of the game at Sedgefield, and that may be a bit surprising. Par 70 courses usually don’t play as massive birdie fests, but that’s the case with this one.

It is worth noting that accuracy does take on some importance at this course, as the green in regulation numbers dip substantially for golfers who miss the fairway off the tee. I will not be weighting distance at all, as you will see a lot of players club down off the tee in order to try and hit more fairways. Current form and some course history are a nice bonus, especially when they intersect with one golfer. Par 4 scoring will also get some added weight on a course where we have twelve par 4s and only a pair of par 5s.

Tool Highlights

Weather could also be a big factor this week, as the remnants of Hurricane Debby will be rolling through the area on Thursday and Friday. These days might end up being complete wash-outs for golf. I will build some stacks from each side of the tee time waves just in case we get an unexpected advantage as the result of any delays. I think it’s going to be hard to predict in advance, but you never know when an edge will shake out. If you are building 25+ lineups this week, you need to be building some stacks on each side.

Lastly, we might be able to consider the motivation angle. This is the last event before the annual FedExCup playoffs, and the playoffs only include the top 70 golfers in the standings this year. Most of the “safe” golfers have elected to skip this week, but almost every golfer situated between 50th to 90th in the current standings will be participating. That gives us a lot of “above average” golfers in this field, and the middle tier is extremely spread out. Expect some unpredictability here, and don’t be afraid to go with some balanced builds.

Let’s get to some of my favorite GPP picks for the week!

The poor start to the year is a long way back in the rear view mirror at the moment for Sungjae Im. Since the beginning of May, Im has made nine total starts. He has finished inside the top twelve in seven of them. That’s a pretty solid ratio. The other two starts were missed cuts, but both came at major championships. He is coming off a strong T4 and T7 run in Scotland, and he should be nicely rested after not competing in Paris last week. He also has great history at this venue, with all five of his previous trips resulting in top 25 finishes. He has gained more than 40 strokes over field average in those five starts. Im is the clear-cut top option for me this week in all formats.
