PGA DFS GPP Breakdown: Fortinet Championship
Top-ranked grinder, STLCardinals84, will break down his top PGA DFS picks in various price ranges for this week’s tournament. Which golfers should you be targeting to try and take down the big DFS tournaments? Find out below.
Welcome back, golf grinders! It’s nice that we have a regular PGA Tour event on the schedule this week. However, with this being the only PGA Tour event in the month of September thanks to the Ryder Cup, we have a lot of top golfers that have simply decided to take the month off (or are playing in the Ryder Cup). It’s a bit strange to see Justin Thomas and Max Homa in the field prior to the Ryder Cup, but they may be looking to shake off some rust. Given the weak nature of the field, don’t be afraid to expect the unexpected and go with some lower-owned plays.
This event used to be the Frys.com open back when DFS golf first got rolling. Then, it was the Safeway Open. Now, it is the Fortinet Championship. Despite the sponsor changes, the Silverado Course in Napa Valley remains the same. As is the case with many courses that we see during the fall, this venue does not require a ton of distance. Precision, ball striking, and touch around the greens will be rewarded on a par 72 layout that is much shorter than your average PGA Tour par 72 stop. The course tips out at a paltry 7,166 yards on the scorecard. That is very short by today’s PGA Tour standards None of the par fours check in at anything longer than 460 yards, and eight of the ten measure 425 yards or less. A lot of the shorter par fours will allow golfers to hit wedges for their second shots, so don’t be afraid to focus on golfers with elite short iron and wedge play. With many different grass surfaces in play on this course, I’m less concerned about lending an edge to golfers that excel on a particular type — unless you want to focus on putting (which I will not). Golfers who are comfortable playing out west get the bump for me.
Let’s get to some of my favorite PGA DFS picks of the week!
PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel GPP Breakdown for the Fortinet Championship
Max Homa
DraftKings: $11,000
Yahoo: $48
With Justin Thomas in poor form, your top play in the field is a no doubter. It’s the first time we’ve ever seen Homa with odds this short, and it’s well deserved. He has won this event in each of the past two years. He always plays better golf in California. He’s riding a wave of momentum heading into the Ryder Cup. He finished the 2022-2023 season with five straight top 15 finishes. Don’t overthink this one. If you have the salary available, start your lineups with Homa this week.
