Top-ranked grinder, STLCardinals84, will break down his top PGA DFS picks in various price ranges for this week’s tournament. Which golfers should you be targeting to try and take down the big DFS tournaments? Find out below.

Hello, Grinders! Welcome back to the PGA DFS GPP breakdown! We have a big major on tap next week with The Open Championship, so the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour are collaborating this week with a “co-sponsored” event between the two Tours with the Genesis Scottish Open for the second consecutive year.

It is important to note that this is not a “new” event. While many of the PGA Tour regulars have never played here or just played for the first time a year ago, this is a tournament that has been contested annually on the European Tour / DP World Tour. Therefore, we do have more history than you would think for the event. This brings about an important point: many DFS players will gravitate toward rostering the traditional PGA Tour players that they are more familiar with. However, the European golfers generally will have an advantage at this tournament, and that’s even more of an advantage for us if they are lower owned.

As for the course, Renaissance Club will play host to the tournament. In the three years where the European Tour held the event here, the winning scores were -22, -11, and -18, though it played as a par 71 in those events. In last year’s co-branding debut, weather was a challenge and the winning score was only -7. Wind is the main defense that the course has (as is the case with many courses in Scotland), and it is not expected to be super windy this week. When you add in some pre-tournament rain and softer conditions, I would expect plenty of scoring opportunities to be available. The course will play as a par 70 with five par threes and three par fives. As usual, ball striking and tee to green play will be the primary metrics that I will be looking at.

Given that I do expect the course to play easier this year, it should benefit Cantlay quite a bit. His all around statistical fit is rock solid, and he also finished fourth here a year ago when the course played more difficult. He hasn’t missed a single cut in five months, and eight of his last eleven stroke play starts have resulted in top 15 finishes. Over his last 36 rounds, he ranks inside the top 40 in this field in every strokes gained metric and ranks second in ball striking. Take the great combination of safety and upside.
