Mexico Open at Vidanta
Welcome back to the PGA DFS GPP breakdown! We have the Mexico Open at Vidanta on the schedule this week, and this will be the second year for this tournament.
It’s always difficult to peg newer tournaments given the lack of course information and historic data points, but at least we have one year of data in the books. Jon Rahm won the debut edition as the clear top option in the field, and he returns this week to defend his title in a woeful field that features just three players ranked in the top 50 of the OWGR. As for the course, Vidanta Vallarta is the host venue. It is a par 71 that measures over 7,400 yards on the scorecard. However, it’s not your traditional par 71 with three par fives. This course has four par fives and FIVE par threes, which means there are only nine par fours on the course. You can upgrade the importance of long iron play here with the longer par threes and par fives being a significant percentage of holes.
As usual, this projects as a ball striker’s course where approach play will be important. However, I am placing more importance on off the tee game, as long, accurate drives will put golfers at a huge advantage on this course with the long par fours and the four par fives. Scoring will depend on the strength of the wind, as there are plenty of water and bunker hazards on the course. As of now, winds are not expected to be as high as they were a year ago, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see better scoring this year.
With the general information out of the way, let’s get to some of my favorite GPP picks!
