PGA Championship

Greetings, golf Grinders! Even though the new calendar has been in place for five years now, it still feels a bit odd to be talking about a major championship in the month of May. However, we have the PGA Championship on the docket for this week. There are plenty of healthy GPP prize pools out there, so we will try to find some golden GPP picks in this article. Good luck in seeking out that big payday!

As for this year’s PGA Championship, Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, NY will be the host venue. It is a par 70 course that was completely renovated a few years ago. It will play as a par 70 that can stretch to nearly 7,400 yards — which is massive for a par 70 layout. Both par fives sit at 600+ yards. Two of the par threes sit at 225+ yards. There are no easy birdie holes.

You’re going to have to drive it well. You’re going to need to stay out of the thick rough. You’re going to need to scramble. You’re going to need to make six foot par saves. Any weakness will be exposed here, and I expect this to play very difficult. Don’t be surprised if the winning score is in the single digits under par. I am focusing on driving distance, approach play, and scrambling as my three main metrics when targeting my players.

Let’s take a look at some of my favorite GPP picks for the week!

Rory McIlroy
DraftKings: $10,700
FanDuel: $11,900
Yahoo: $48

If you’re looking for safety at the top, then I would suggest going with Rahm or Cantlay. However, when you factor in upside combined with projected ownership, McIlroy is my GPP choice by a wide margin. Yes, he has struggled compared to his peak over the past two months. I’m taking that opportunity to get him at lower ownership. His distance off the tee is a huge benefit at Oak Hill, and I think he will thrive in the difficult conditions. Expect him to be motivated to put the doubts to rest, and his long-term stats still grade out just as well as the other elite players. For bonus points, his wife is also from Rochester, so he’s familiar with the area and this is somewhat of a “home game” for him. Hey, it doesn’t hurt!
