PGA DFS GPP Breakdown: THE PLAYERS Championship

Long-time grinder, STLCardinals84, breaks down his top PGA DFS picks in various price ranges for this week’s tournament. Which golfers should you be targeting to try and take down the big DFS tournaments? Find out below!

Hey, Grinders! Welcome to the GPP breakdown for THE PLAYERS Championship. This tournament is commonly known as the “fifth major” — but remember that it is now the first one to be played each year. With the PGA TOUR schedule changes that were enacted a few years back, this tournament got moved from May to March. It feels a bit weird now that we just had an “elevated event” with a very similar field a week ago, but hopefully we have a fun event on tap. There are certainly some big prize pools out there in the DFS world this week, so let’s try to win some money!

As we turn our attention to a new week, TPC Sawgrass will be the host venue (as usual) for THE PLAYERS. In general, ball striking is the name of the game here as is often the case with “major championship” venues. Sawgrass is a relatively short par 72 course by today’s PGA TOUR standards, but it will play a bit longer than it used to thanks to the cooler March weather. The prevailing wind generally blows in a different direction at TPC Sawgrass in March than it does in May, so we can’t take pre-2019 history as gospel with the calendar change. In particular, the iconic par three 17th often plays into the wind in March. There will be plenty of splash down water balls as we go throughout the weekend, and that will be very interesting come Sunday afternoon.

Tool Highlights

Interestingly, a lot of the top golfers have struggled at this event in recent years. Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele are two big names that offer up just a couple examples of how challenging TPC Sawgrass can be, even for the best golfers. As usual with these tougher tracks, I will focus on ball striking and approach play as my primary metrics. I’ve also started messing around with the new Rabbit Hole tool on BetSperts Golf, and it comes highly recommended. Check it out- you can filter by specific performance measures as much as your heart desires, and I like filtering for golfers who do well on TPC tracks.

With the general information out of the way, let’s get to some of my favorite GPP picks for this big event!

Scottie Scheffler is the obvious answer and needs no explanation at the top this week, but I don’t want Scheffler to make or break my week. If he putts well, Scheffler is going to contend. My exposure to him will likely be even with the field. As for my GPP difference maker at the top, I will try to get most overweight on Hovland. After missing the cut in his debut at this tournament, he has responded with a pair of top tens in his last two trips (T3 and T9 the last two years). The chipping is still an issue at times, but Hovland hasn’t missed a cut in an event in the United States since June of 2022. That is a remarkable run, and his tee to green precision should be of tremendous value this week.
