PGA DFS GPP Breakdown: The Sentry
Long-time grinder, STLCardinals84, will break down his top PGA DFS picks in various price ranges for this week’s tournament. Which golfers should you be targeting to try and take down the big DFS tournaments? Find out below!
Happy New Year, Grinders! As is always the case with the first week of January, I have three words for you:
Golf.
Is.
Back.
Yes! Our favorite fantasy game returns for the start of the new year, and it’s just in time, as the NFL regular season is winding down this week. As usual, we start things off with The Sentry at Kapalua in Hawaii. This is a fairly lengthy par 73 track (four par fives but only three par threes), but you will see plenty of distance on shots at this event given the thin air and the layout in Hawaii. There are plenty of downhill hole setups, and you will see some BOMBS off the tee. The most important factor is this: In most seasons, this course has played as the easiest on TOUR in relation to par. The fairways are wide, the pin locations are accessible, and the par fives are very scoreable. 33 of the 37 golfers in last year’s field finished seven under par or better. Twelve of them finished at -20 or better. Birdies, birdies, and more birdies are the name of the game at Kapalua. High winds are the only real defense the course can offer, and the current weather forecasts are calling for 10-20 MPH winds all weekend. That is relatively mild by Hawaii standards, so we should still see plenty of scoring opportunities.
We could also see better top-end scores this year given the expanded field. This used to be a “Tournament of Champions” reserved only for winners from the previous year, but it has been expanded as an elevated event with around 60 golfers this year.
As for statistics, driving distance, ball striking, birdie or better percentage, and par five scoring are the key metrics that I am targeting for this event. You want golfers who will be aggressive on this course, as the wide fairways leave plenty of room for that aggressiveness to be rewarded. Another key thing to note is that this is a no cut event. All of the golfers will get four rounds to attack a friendly golf course, and things tend to be a little more unpredictable in these birdie fests. With that knowledge in mind, don’t be afraid to take some risk/reward options in your GPP builds.
With the general information out of the way, let’s take a look at some golfers that I like in GPP builds this week!
PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel GPP Breakdown for The Sentry
Scottie Scheffler
DraftKings: $11,000
FanDuel: $12,400
Yahoo: $45
If there’s any golfer that could potentially run away with this tournament, it’s Scheffler. We know the tee to green game is going to be fantastic, and he is undoubtedly going to give himself 35-40 strong birdie looks on this course. The question, as always, will be whether or not he can make enough putts. He still ranks basically at the bottom of this field in putting over every longer-term metric, but everything else is fantastic. He ranks 1st or 2nd in every non-short game strokes gained metric over the last 36 and 50 rounds. He won the exhibition-like Hero World Challenge in December. It’s just hard to pass on the upside.
