Welcome back to the PGA DFS GPP breakdown! We have…. no title sponsor for the Houston Open this year. The name has changed a lot over the years, and the date has even changed as well. For a few years, this tournament was contested in the fall, and then there was no Houston Open held in calendar year 2023. The tournament in the fall of 2022 was the most recent one, but that shows as part of the “2022-2023” PGA TOUR calendar, so the semantics can get confusing.

In any case, the tournament has been re-slotted as a spring event for 2024, back in its usual role leading up to The Masters in April.

Note: RotoGrinders has partnered with Betsperts Golf and the Rabbit Hole! Prices will increase the day after the Masters, so take advantage and get grandfathered in at Betsperts’ lowest price now!

Tool Highlights

Memorial Park Golf Course will host for the fourth time. While the course is a municipal layout, don’t let that fool you. It is one that still represents a unique challenge for these PGA TOUR pros. While it plays as a par 72 layout for members, it operates as a par 70 for the PGA Tour with three par 5s, five par 3s, and ten par 4s. As such, par three scoring takes on a little more importance. The par fours are a mix of longer holes combined with two that could be set up to be driveable at least once. Long iron play takes on added importance with three of the par fours sitting at 490+ yards and three of the par threes sitting at 200+ yards on the scorecard. That makes for six holes where a long iron shot will be needed for most of the golfers. Good driving is going to be very important, as an approach that is 30-40 yards closer does have quite an advantage on this course. I will be looking at total driving, carry distance, and good drive percentage with some of my picks. Outside of that, I’ll be looking at current form and ball striking. This is not a course where you can simply hit it anywhere you want off the tee and be able to get away with it.

Over the three years that Memorial Park hosted in the fall, this played as the most difficult course of the fall swing. That’s a nice change from some of the other tournaments we see these days. Let’s get to some of my favorite GPP picks for the week!

Look, you don’t need me to tell you that Scottie Scheffler is an obvious play this week. If you are playing cash games, you have to start with him (assuming he is fully healthy and does not withdraw with his slight neck injury). However, Scheffler and Clark are going to combine for about 70% total ownership on DK and an even higher number on FD. The game theory angle tells you that pivots are certainly fine in GPP builds. This course sets up very well for Will Zalatoris, and he is my favorite pivot at the top. We know the tee to green game will be there, and these greens are hard to putt on for every golfer. I hope the lack of course history keeps the masses away.
