PGA DFS GPP Breakdown: Travelers Championship
Top-ranked grinder, STLCardinals84, will break down his top PGA DFS picks in various price ranges for this week’s tournament. Which golfers should you be targeting to try and take down the big DFS tournaments? Find out below.
Welcome back, Grinders! The U.S. Open is now in the rear view mirror, and we had a surprise winner with Wyndham Clark taking down the trophy at Los Angeles Country Club. The course got a lot of backlash in the media, but I didn’t hate it quite as much as many others did. In any case, it’s time to transition to a new week.
Speaking of this week, we have the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut. This course is a very short par 70 layout by today’s PGA Tour standards, and golfers need to be solid with their approach shots while scoring well on par fours in order to contend here. There are only two par fives at this venue, and they don’t play all that easy compared to other courses on the PGA Tour. As such, par four scoring is of prime importance. That will be a statistic along with the aforementioned focus on approach play. Both long and short hitters can contend here. It is all about finding fairways and greens in regulation and making putts when it matters.
We have a relatively strong field assembled for the week after a major, so this should be a fun tournament. I’m not sure who thought it was wise to have an “elevated” event the week after a major (especially all the way across the country from where said major was played), but we’ll take it. For what it’s worth, Xander Schauffele continued a trend here last year. American golfers have now won this event in 24 of the past 27 years, including nine of the last ten. While there are naturally more American golfers in the stateside events, that trend is at least noteworthy given how global the game of PGA Tour has become in recent years. For whatever reason, Americans tend to play well here in Connecticut.
PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel GPP Breakdown for the Travelers Championship
Patrick Cantlay
DraftKings: $10,200
FanDuel: $11,800
Yahoo: $46
Cantlay is my favorite option on the board this week. He is coming off a great Sunday round to backdoor a top 20 last week, and that should propel him forward with momentum on a course that he loves. Cantlay has finished between 11th in 15th here at the Travelers Championship in five consecutive years. That’s remarkable consistency. The course is a great fit for his game, and he ranks 4th in this field in ball striking over the last 36 rounds. I worry about the focus for a lot of the other top players this week, especially those who don’t play this event regularly, and that also helps to add to Cantlay’s appeal in this spot. He also ranks 2nd on Tour in par four scoring this year. Yes, please!
