Welcome back, golf fans! There’s always a bit of a letdown factor in play the week after the final major of the year, and that is especially true after a thrilling finish to The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. Given the timing on the calendar, we have a very weak field gathered for the 3M Open in Minneapolis, and this has the looks of a wide-open event beyond Scottie Scheffler at the top of the board. While this tournament may not have the buzz and excitement of a major, there are still plenty of prizes to be won on the DFS sites. I actually like this course quite a bit with its volatility, so it will be fun to see how the tournament shakes out. After all, we are just a few weeks away from the FedEx Cup playoffs, so this tournament means a lot to the players who are on the bubble of playoff contention.
TPC Twin Cities is the host course for the 3M Open. It sets up as a moderate-length par 71 with a trio of par 5s in play. While there is water in play on 15 holes around the property, there is still room for the professionals to miss off the tee. The water is really the only hazard that the course offers, but it does bring double bogeys into play if shots are way off target. A 4-shot swing could very easily happen in one hole around here, as an eagle or a double bogey could be made on a par 5. It’s part of the reason why I like this course so much. If you are hitting it well, you could shoot a 62. If you aren’t hitting it well, you could shoot a 76.
The winning score for this event generally comes in around 18-to-20 under par, though Kurt Kitayama got to -23 in very favorable weather conditions last year. The forecast isn’t expected to offer much resistance again his year, so I would again expect plenty of birdies and eagles. Ball striking and approach play will be the name of the game along with birdie makers, as whoever can grab a hot putter will rise to the top of the leaderboard. I will target golfers with strong birdie-or-better percentages as well. I do think you can make a case for the bomber angle too, as we have seen long hitters play well here in the past, and there is some room to miss off the tee as long as you aren’t going in the water.

It feels like Kurt Kitayama doesn’t get recognized as an upper-tier golfer on the PGA TOUR, but he absolutely deserves that recognition. He has missed just a single cut in his last 16 TOUR starts, and he has 9 top-25 and 4 top-10 finishes in 2026. While many will be skeptical about targeting him because he is the defending champion of this event, I am not deterred. I love the balanced lineup build you can get by starting with Kitayama as opposed to paying all the way up for Scottie Scheffler, and the course history that Kitayama has is just a bonus. In addition to last year’s win at this venue, Kitayama also finished 6th in his debut at TPC Twin Cities in 2024. He ranks 5th in this field in tee-to-green play and 8th in ball striking over the last 36 rounds, and he’s a great option in any DFS game format.
