Welcome back, PGA DFS Grinders! It’s hard to believe that we are just ONE week away from the Masters! April is here! Baseball is here! The NBA and NHL Playoffs are near! We still have a couple of huge college basketball games ahead! It’s a fantastic time on the sports calendar.

Despite all the fun that lies ahead, we still have four more days of golf to get through before we can start to dig deeply into Augusta. The Valero Texas Open is on the calendar as our appetizer. As is often the case, the week prior to a major brings us a relatively weak field. The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio will be the host course in an event that is often impacted greatly by weather. Wind can be a big factor in Texas at this time of the year, and this is one of the events where we often see an edge in the draw. One of the biggest weather edges ever in DFS golf happened at this event several years ago. Be sure to monitor the forecast as we get closer to Thursday’s tee off, and be prepared to pivot to tee time stacks if that is warranted. I will provide an update in here on Wednesday if I am changing my approach at all.

As for TPC San Antonio, this track is a lengthy par 72 that features a lot of long par 4s, a few longer par 3s, and 3 par 5s that measure over 590 yards on the scorecard. Distance off the tee is a nice benefit as long as you aren’t too wayward with the driver. However, accuracy is also important, as the rough can be very thick here. Scrambling and bogey avoidance are also important, as this course has a lot of runoff areas that make saving par difficult if you can’t hold the green on approach. It’s a tough track when the wind blows, and you really can’t hide a weakness.

My key stats to target this week will be the usual ball striking, approach play, and scrambling, with a mix of distance/total driving as well. I also don’t mind targeting par-5 scoring with this being a tougher course that has 4 of those.

Let’s dive into some of my favorite GPP picks for this week!

PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel Tournament Breakdown for the Valero Texas Open

Tommy Fleetwood
DraftKings: $10,500
FanDuel: $12,100

PGA Golfer Fleetwood

It is interesting to see what players choose to tee it up the week before a major. Fleetwood has seemingly enjoyed playing in San Antonio as a tune-up. He started playing this event in 2023 and came away with a top-10 finish, and he had a chance to do the same before a poor final round sent him further down the leaderboard last year in the midst of rough weather. You just never know what TPC San Antonio will throw at you. In any event, I like the way Fleetwood’s all-around game fits with this course, and I tend to like him more on challenging layouts. He has also started the year with a trio of finishes of T8 or better in just 4 PGA TOUR starts, so the form is solid. He’s a great starting point for any GPP build.
