Hello again, golf fans! For what seems like the first time in a while, we have a full-field event that’s not a major or some type of special tournament. It’s nice to see a “regular” event for once, even if it is the much maligned John Deere Classic. I have always loved this event more than most people, as it is the most accessible tournament for me to attend at around a half an hour drive from my home. It will always have a special place in my heart, and it helps that I have had some DFS success over the years with this event too.

TPC Deere Run will play the usual role as host. It’s going to be a hot week in the western part of Illinois, but that is the norm for this time of year and 4th of July weekend. TPC Deere Run always sets up as one of the easiest courses on TOUR. In fact, TPC Deere Run has hosted this event 25 times now, and the winning score has never been worse than 16 strokes under par. It has been 18 under par or better in each of the last 16 editions, though it got to just that very number a year ago. Birdies and eagles are the name of the game around this place. This is a bit of a rare layout in the fact that it is a par 71, so we have 3 par 5s in play this week. A lot of the par 4s are fairly short in terms of distance, so wedge play will be absolutely critical. I will be honing in on players who are solid on approach while also looking at birdie makers and golfers with a good combination of length and accuracy off the tee. Distance can be an advantage if a golfer is hitting the fairway. At the end of the day, it all comes down to converting the scoring opportunities.

Getting as many golfers through the cut as possible is paramount for this event, as there will be plenty of scoring opportunities available. It will take a very, very good 5/6 lineup to beat any lineup that gets all 6 golfers through the cut since almost every golfer in the field will be racking up fantasy points. We also need to embrace variance, as these shootouts often become a bit unpredictable.

Let’s move along and check out some of my favorite tournament options for the week!

PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel Tournament Breakdown for the John Deere Classic

Keith Mitchell
DraftKings: $10,000
FanDuel: $11,600

Mitchell of the PGA

Keith Mitchell was born and raised in Georgia and loves playing in the heat and humidity of Illinois in July. He has made TPC Deere Run a regular stop, and he has made the cut in each of the last 3 editions. I expect more upside to come eventually given his aggressiveness and scoring prowess, and he is a golfer who could overpower this course on the right week if he is driving it well. He ranks 2nd in this field in tee-to-green play and ball striking over the last 36 rounds, and you know he will go for as many birdies as he can get. He had an impressive T4 at the U.S. Open and has finished 29th and 22nd around that in his last 3 starts. I think a win is coming soon, and this weak field would make for the perfect time.
