PGA DFS Tournament Breakdown: The Open Championship

Long-time grinder, stlcardinals84, breaks down his top PGA DFS tournament picks in various price ranges on DraftKings & FanDuel for The Open Championship. Which golfers should you be targeting to try and take down the big DFS tournaments? Find out below!
Welcome golf fans and grinders of all sports! We always have more casual DFS players joining the golf landscape this week, with MLB on the All-Star Break and big tournaments to be had for the season’s final major. This week brings us The Open Championship this week at Royal Birkdale in the United Kingdom.
Before we get too deep into the analysis, I will say that it is usually very important to monitor the weather forecast this week. The Open Championship is being played on a traditional links course where the main defense is the wind, and the course will become much more difficult if Mother Nature gets involved. However, early forecasts are calling for sunshine and relatively mild winds, which is basically the opposite of what we generally get for this tournament. If that forecast holds, expect better scoring this year than usual.
As for the course, Royal Birkdale last hosted The Open in 2017, where Jordan Spieth won with a score of -12 for the week. Given the current forecast, I would expect the winning number to be better than that this time around. However, the course is very firm and fast at the moment, and this will be a proper test of links golf. Hitting fairways and avoiding trouble is going to be the most important factor for success, and this major championship will provide an all-around test for all the golfers in the field. Good ball strikers and those with strong links experience will rise up my wish list, and I will absolutely prioritize golfers with solid scrambling and bogey avoidance metrics as well.
Let’s move along to some of my favorite tournament picks for the season’s final major!
PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel Tournament Breakdown for The Open Championship
Tommy Fleetwood
DraftKings: $10,500
FanDuel: $12,100

Both DraftKings and FanDuel generally offer soft pricing for major tournaments, and that lends itself to stars-and-scrubs builds quite often. That makes Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy very accessible this week, but I have some concerns about paying top dollar for them, particularly with Scheffler’s salary and the way his approach game has been trending in the wrong direction. I greatly prefer the more balanced builds for the season’s final major, and starting with Fleetwood allows you plenty of salary flexibility. Fleetwood grew up in the area of Royal Birkdale, and he will be the fan favorite all week. He’s had more success winning on European soil in the past, and his form has been trending in the right direction, with 5 straight top-15 finishes heading into this event. I can see him lifting the Claret Jug on Sunday afternoon.
