Welcome back to the PGA Tournament Breakdown article! We have the U.S. Open behind us, and Shinnicock Hills really tested the golfers with 4 days of tough conditions. Wyndham Clark hung on to secure his second U.S. Open title with an impressive wire-to-wire win. After the tough test last week, I’m sure the golfers are ready for the welcome respite that is the Travelers Championship this week.

As we transition to a new week, we move on to the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut. This feels like the 45th elevated event of the year, as we have another tournament with no cut and a field of 72 golfers. As I have stated several times in recent months, I really don’t like these tournaments, especially when they occur the week after a major. Alas, we can only play the cards we are dealt.

Host venue TPC River Highlands is a very short Par 70 by today’s PGA TOUR standards, and golfers need to be solid with their approach shots while scoring well on par 4s in order to contend. There are only 2 par 5s here, and they don’t play very easily compared to other courses on the PGA TOUR. As such, par 4 scoring is of prime importance. This is a less-than-driver course because it checks in at fewer than 6,900 yards, so distance is not a major factor. I’ll focus on overall ball striking, and I’ll give a bump to course history at this venue along with considering short-game play a little more than usual.

PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel Tournament Breakdown for the Travelers Championship

Xander Schauffele
DraftKings: $10,200
FanDuel: $12,100

PGA TOUR golfer Xander Schauffele

It goes to show how high expectations are for Schauffele when this is considered a “down” year for him. He has missed just 1 cut in 13 starts, and that was in his first start of the season. In his 12 other starts, he has 2 top-5 finishes, 5 top-10 finishes, and 9 top-25 finishes. In the highest-profile events, he finished 3rd at THE PLAYERS, 9th at the Masters, and 11th last week at the U.S. Open. Yet it feels like he has been playing poorly if you read about him across media circles. I’m more than happy to start rosters with Schauffele this week. He has a win at this venue on his career resume in 2022, and he ranks 9th in this field in approach play and 6th in ball striking over the last 36 rounds. He’s a great starting point for your tournament roster builds.
