Greetings, golf fans! Welcome back to the tournament breakdown for our third major of the season, as the U.S. Open makes its way to Shinnecock Hills in New York for this year’s edition. Shinnecock Hills last hosted the U.S. Open back in 2018 (and 2004 prior to that), so we don’t have a lot of course history data to base our thought process on this week. That said, we know what to expect with a U.S. Open. It’s going to be difficult. The winning score was 1-over par in 2018, and the USGA setup will always test even the best golfers in the world.

As for Shinnecock Hills, there is only one small water hazard and very few trees on the course, and it’s about as “links-y” as a layout can get in the United States. The rough is very penalizing here, so give a boost to guys who find fairways and greens and also to players who play well on links courses. I like the angle of looking at total driving this week, as the course is also plenty long. The golfers who have the best combination of distance and accuracy off the tee will be rewarded. Good scrambling also helps, as being able to save par will be of extreme importance on many holes. That puts bogey avoidance on the radar screen as well. Putting is less of an emphasis for me this week, especially since the tricky greens and uncertain speeds will cause problems for even the best of putters.

There are very few easy holes on this course, with just a pair of par 5s available and one measuring well over 600 yards on the scorecard. Long par 4s are the name of the game, so golfers will need to be dialed in with their mid-to-long irons to have success. I would be surprised if we saw the winning score get under par by a significant number, especially since it’s looking like it might be a bit breezy each day.

With the housekeeping out of the way, let’s move along. Here are some of my favorite tournament DFS picks for the U.S. Open!

PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel Tournament Breakdown for the U.S. Open

Jon Rahm
DraftKings: $11,500
FanDuel: $11,700

LIV Golfer Jon Rahm

I know the competition isn’t great on the LIV Tour, but Rahm is still showing that he can play elite golf. In 9 LIV starts this year, he has 2 wins and 4 runner-up finishes, so he has finishes of 1st or 2nd 67% of the time he’s teed it up. He had a great chance to win the PGA Championship if not for a fantastic final round from Aaron Rai. The game is still very much there, and Rahm has always thrived in difficult setups. He has made the cut in each of the last 6 U.S. Opens, and it feels like he might get lost in the shuffle a bit in this top-tier range. He’s very much one of my favorite tournament options given his form and great all-around game.
