Welcome to the month of August, golf fans! The calendar switch means the FedExCup playoffs are on the horizon, with the Wyndham Championship sitting as the final event on the calendar before those playoffs begin. It should be an exciting week of golf. The top 70 golfers in the season standings after this week will qualify for the start of the playoffs, and every golfer from the range of 61st place to 100th place in the current standings is teeing it up in North Carolina.
As for the regular-season finale, we usually expect a birdie fest at Sedgefield Country Club. This is a relatively straightforward Par 70 course, as it has played as one of the easier Par 70 courses on the PGA TOUR for the last several years. The winning score has been -18 or better here in 9 of the last 10 editions, and Cameron Young tied the tournament record with a -22 one year ago. In short, scoring is paramount here.
It is worth noting that accuracy does take on some importance at this course, as the greens-in-regulation numbers dip substantially for golfers who miss the fairway off the tee. I will not be weighing distance at all, and that is not a surprise on a shorter Par 70 course. In fact, you will see a lot of players club down off the tee in order to try and hit more fairways. Current form and strong course history are a nice bonus, as usual. Otherwise, we are looking at the usual ball-striking and approach metrics to determine good course fits. Par 4 Scoring will also get some added weight on a course where we have 12 par 4s and only a pair of par 5s. Finally, I will also weigh short game a little more than normal, as shootout events with strong scoring conditions often turn into putting contests.

With most of the elite golfers resting this week in preparation for the playoff events, we do have Young teeing it up at Sedgefield. He is the only golfer that currently sits inside the top 15 in the standings who is playing. That is one of many examples why he is the clear class of this field. If we look at an extended 50-round sample size, he leads this field in Total Strokes Gained as well as tee-to-green play. He ranks 2nd in Ball Striking. He ranks 3rd in Approach. He’s top 20 in around-the-green play. There isn’t a real weakness, with the exception being that he is only slightly above average with the putter. He’s so good everywhere else that I don’t think it matters. He won here a year ago for his first PGA TOUR victory, and he’s added 2 more wins and a plethora of top-10 finishes since then. He doesn’t carry the same extreme salary that we often see with a top option, and he’s easy to fit into lineups. I’ll happily start my rosters with him.
