PGA DFS Value Plays: RBC Canadian Open

Micah Bedard (Darddog) is here to pinpoint the best PGA DFS salary savers for this week’s RBC Canadian Open.

Pretty slow golf news day, eh?

I’ll keep my stance short: Jay Monahan and the rest of the PGA Tour executives look like absolute morons after dismissing the LIV ever since it’s inception, saying it was “ruining the game” and highlighting it’s financial backers’ human rights abuses. They then joined forces with the exact league they’ve acted as if it didn’t exist.

If you’re a fan of The Office, the best explanation of the whole situation was that LIV pulled a Michael Scott Paper Company on the PGA Tour. There are plenty of videos/memes out there for y’all to enjoy.

Anyways, you guys aren’t here to hear my hot takes (wait, you aren’t?). You’re here for some low-priced gems to set your lineups apart.

This year’s edition of the RBC Canadian Open will be played at Oakdale Golf & Country Club in Toronto. There’s never been a professional event at the Par 72, 7,264 yard course. In fact, there’s a ton of uncertainty in terms of how the course is going to play and even whether or not it was a Par 71 or 72.

Since most Canadian Opens are “birdie fests”, a lot of people are assuming that’s how this week is going to play out. It definitely could, but I’ve seen some chatter that some of the caddies think the winning score could be between -13 and -15. The point is, there is a ton of speculation, and I don’t think anyone has any idea exactly what type of player will do well here.

So let’s embrace that variance and dig into some PGA DFS picks on DK ($7,500 and below) and FD ($9,000 and below) for this week’s RBC Canadian Open.

PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings & FanDuel Value Plays for the RBC Canadian Open

Vincent Norrman
DraftKings: $7,500
FanDuel: $8,800

You guys are probably tired of seeing Mr. Norrman in my value plays article each week. At least I gave you a week off since he wasn’t in the field at The Memorial. His all-around game is in great form. He didn’t have the best putting performance at the Charles Schwab but had his best week on approach in a while. His price is still in a very desirable range, and I’ll continue to go back to him until he proves me wrong.

Mackenzie Hughes
DraftKings: $7,400
FanDuel: $9,000

Hughes is one of my favorite GPP plays of the week. Yes, he’s not in great form at all, but he had a bit of an abnormal two days at the Memorial last week. He lost in every category, except gaining almost two strokes on approach, while missing the cut on the number. He was born in Hamilton, not too far away from Toronto. Although it’s not the same course every year, he has finished T-28, T-14, and T-8 in his last three RBC Canadian Open appearances. He also won the Canadian Amateur back-to-back in 2011 & 2012. Being back on his home soil should help him feel comfortable and hopefully results in a good finish for us.

Mark Hubbard
DraftKings: $7,300
FanDuel: $9,100

Homeless Hubbs has been absolutely on fire in the ball-striking category. Ever since the RBC Heritage in April, he has been gaining significant strokes on approach every time out. He totally trunk-slammed on Sunday, like a lot of other guys, and ended up finishing T-30 at the Memorial. He’s made five cuts in a row, and I look for him to continue the trend (and his good ball-striking) in Toronto.

Akshay Bhatia
DraftKings: $7,200
FanDuel: $8,500

Akshay did not have a good time at Jack’s Place last week. He lost a ridiculous 2.3 strokes on approach, despite gaining OTT, en route to a missed cut. That has to be super frustrating to drive the ball so well on a course where you have to keep it in the fairway, and your approach play just lets you down. This course should most likely be a much easier test, and that will be music to Bhatia’s ears. I feel the same way about him as I did in Mexico where he had a great finish: he’s too cheap for the talent, and hopefully we get an ownership discount with the MC last week.

Garrick Higgo
DraftKings: $7,100
FanDuel: $8,500

As you all know by now, Higgo has a soft spot in my heart. I almost wrote him up last week and am definitely regretting it after he finished T-30. He’s one of the most consistent drivers on tour, gaining at least .74 strokes OTT in his last six tournaments. The only worry is the approach game, as he’s lost strokes in his last seven events. Easier courses fit his game a little better, and I think he could flash some upside at Oakdale if the irons cooperate.

Aaron Cockerill
DraftKings: $7,000
FanDuel: $8,200

My last value play of the week is a bit of a wildcard. Cockerill is a member of the DP World Tour and has been in ridiculously good form. In his last five events there, his finishes are T-10, T-16, T-21, 2, and T-13. Now the DP fields have been very bad, but you can’t deny he’s been playing lights out. Last year, he finished T-48 in this event and came in with much worse form. Take a flier on the Canadian kid this week.

Good luck to y’all this week!
