Jason Day cleaned up at the Players Championship to claim his seventh title in the last year. The PGA Tour now heads back to Texas for the AT&T Byron Nelson. The field for this event is much weaker than last week, but there are still a few big names in Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, and Matt Kuchar. The event is held at the TPC Four Seasons in Irving, Texas. This was the first PGA Tour event for Spieth, and as you can see from the picture on the right, he was very young. This course had a major redesign in 2007, so for those of you that are course history buffs, make sure to throw out any results prior to that. The TPC Four Seasons is a Par 70 that measures just under 7,200 yards. There are only two par fives on the course, but it does feature a drivable par four that should provide some eagle opportunities.
As far as the type of player that we should target this week, it’s difficult to narrow down the statistics that work here. Looking at the past winners and past top ten finishers, we have seen a mix of short and long hitters, as well as good and bad putters. If you were playing fantasy golf last season, you may remember this event for the par four that they had to turn into a 100-yard par three thanks to the mounds of water on the course from all the rain. Gary Woodland holed out and was originally given credit for a hole in one and an albatross. The PGA Tour then changed it’s mind and decided that the hole needed to be a par three rather than a par four.
There looks to be a lot of rain in the forecast, at least early in the week. If it does rain a lot leading up to the event, it could make the conditions rather soggy. When that happens, it usually gives bombers an advantage because the shorter hitters won’t get any roll on their drives, which leaves them with much longer approach shots. Rather than targeting distance or accuracy this week, I am going to look for the total drivers that have that combination of length and precision. Strokes gained tee to green and strokes gained putting are always important. Par breakers (birdies and eagles) always help identify the golfers that fit the DraftKings’ scoring system. And finally, par four scoring should have a big impact on the outcome, as there are 12 par fours on the scorecard this week.
