Event Preview
I somehow managed to survive my trip to the Waste Management Open. Unfortunately, my DFS week left me feeling the same way as I did leaving the course – broke and nursing a hangover. All kidding aside, it was a blast out there in Scottsdale. It was great to see Gary Woodland pick up the win after dealing with some hard times off the course last season. It would have also been great to see Chez Reavie hold up the trophy, but we can only have one winner each week. Everyone else in the field becomes a distant memory. This week the PGA Tour heads back to California for the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. As it says in the name, this is another pro-am event, so get ready for four days of watching Bill Murray and Justin Timberlake swing a golf club.
In order to accommodate a full field of professionals and amateurs, the event features a three-course rotation. The golfers will play each course once before the cut is made, which does change the strategy a bit when it comes to fantasy golf. With all golfers guaranteed to play 54 holes, we can afford to take a few more chances in our player pool. As far as the cut goes, the top 60 professionals and ties will play the final round. The top 25 pro-am teams will also play on Sunday, although the scoring will only count for the professionals that actually made the cut. Here is a quick rundown of each of the three courses that the golfers will face this week:
Pebble Beach Golf Links — This is the host course for the event, which means it will be in the rotation for the first three days and then host the final round on Sunday. The course is a Par 72 that measures only 6,816 yards. The fairways here are quite generous in size, especially compared to the last few events. The greens are extremely small, measuring only 3,500 square feet on average. In fact, these are the smallest greens that golfers will see all year. They feature Poa Annua grass and should roll pretty slow with a stimp around 10.5.
Spyglass Hill Golf Club — This course will be played one time by each golfer. It is a Par 72 that measures 6,953 yards. The greens are larger than those of Pebble, but still only average 5,000 square feet. The course also features Poa Annua greens that will play at a stimp around 10.0.
Monterey Peninsula Country Club — This course will be played one time by each golfer. It is a Par 71 that measures 6,958 yards. This course features the largest greens that the golfers will see this week (7,000 square feet on average), but they are also Poa Annua. The greens will play a little quicker here with a stimp of 11.5.
Looking at each of the courses, we should quickly note that they are all less than 7,000 yards in length. Not only are these courses short, but they all feature four par fives. Driving distance is not a huge advantage this week, as these set up better as second shot golf courses. All three of the courses can be tough in the wind, but all three are score-able in calm conditions. Looking at the weather this week, Saturday looks like the only day that could cause some problems. The four main statistics that I will be targeting this week are: strokes gained approach, birdie or better percentage, par five scoring, and par four scoring. I will also take a peak at putting on Poa greens, as most golfers either know how to putt on them or get frustrated by them.
Cut Rule:With this being a pro-am event, the top 60 and ties will move on after three rounds.
Recent Winners of this Event: Jordan Spieth (2017), Vaughn Taylor (2016), Brandt Snedeker (2015), Jimmy Walker (2014), Brandt Snedeker (2013)
