Event Preview

How great was the Arnold Palmer Invitational? More importantly, how great is the state of golf right now? Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, and Tiger Woods were all question marks heading into the season and they are now big threats to take home the green jacket next month. We have an interesting week of golf on tap, as we have the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play and the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship. DraftKings created a new scoring system for the match play event and will offer contests for both tournaments, while FanDuel and FantasyDraft will only have contests for the stroke play event in the Dominican Republic. We will focus on the stroke play event in the First Look, but will include WGC picks in most of our premium content.

While this is the first time that this course has hosted a PGA Tour event, it did host Web.com events in each of the last two seasons. If you are looking for course history, there are two years of data that we can use. I would typically say that we shouldn’t put much stock into a Web.com event, but this week’s field is basically as strong as most Web.com events. The Corales Golf Course is a Par 72 that measures 7,668 yards. It is a beautiful resort-style course that is set among cliffs, quarries, and ocean coves. Six of the holes are oceanside, which creates some amazing views for the visitors and for those watching on television. Speaking of television, Tony Romo is in the field.

We don’t know a ton about how the course plays, but the fairways are extremely wide and forgiving. The greens are made of Paspalum grass and by all accounts are in great shape. Being next to the ocean, wind can play a big factor. However, judging by the winning scores from the last two years (20-under and 24-under), we should expect a lot of birdies. The cut will likely end up being in the five to seven-under range. The course is relatively flat and appears to be a bomber’s paradise. If you can find a bomber that can putt (might be hard to do in this field), you should be in good shape. I’m not going to overthink this tournament. I will be targeting strong tee to green golfers that can make birdies.

Make sure to check out our premium PGA content and tune into “Drive for Show, DFS for Dough” on GrindersLive.

Cut Rule:Top 70 and ties will move on after the first two rounds.
