Event Preview

How about the finish at last week’s Northern Trust? Having Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth in the final pairing is what golf fans and networks dream of. Luckily, they didn’t disappoint. After starting the round three shots back, Johnson pulled even with Speith late on the back nine. Spieth then made a gutsy par save on the par three 17th and Johnson followed with a lengthy par save of his own on 18 to force a playoff. What happened after that was something I’ll never forget. Spieth hit a very nice tee shot in the middle of the fairway. The pressure was on Johnson and he decided to take the most aggressive line any golfer took on the 18th all week. He cleared the water and was nearly 90 yards closer to the green than Spieth. He then proceeded to knock the approach shot within four feet and make the birdie to cap off the win.

Many people complain that the FedEx Cup doesn’t hold a candle to the majors. While that’s certainly true, it’s a much better way to end the season than we used to have. We now get to see the best golfers in the world in the final few events and looking at the past winners of these tournaments, most have been big names. This week we head to Boston for the Dell Technologies Championship. The event has a new sponsor, as it used to be called the Deutsche Bank Championship. The course will not change though, as TPC Boston has hosted this event every year since 2003.

TPCBoston

TPC Boston is a Par 71 that stretches nearly 7,300 yards. It’s obviously not a short track, but it’s certainly not as daunting as some of the other courses we have seen on the PGA Tour this season. The course itself is situated on 400 acres that cover both woodlands and wetlands. It features generous fairways, fairly short rough, and bentgrass greens. I’ve seen some rumblings on Twitter that the rough might be a little longer this year, but I’m not putting a ton of stock into it. This is a course that suits the bombers, especially the ones that can carry some of these cross bunkers.

The type of golfer that I’m looking for is pretty similar to most weeks. I want solid ball strikers that are slightly above-average when it comes to driving distance. They need to be strong off the tee and with their approach shots, particularly over their last few events. I will also be weighing course history pretty heavily, as the same golfers seem to play well here each and every season. It’s a little early in the week to look at forecasts, but wind may play a big role on Friday and Saturday. Yes, you read that correctly. This tournament always end on Labor Day (Monday), so it doesn’t start until Friday. Make sure to check the weather on Thursday night to see if one tee time grouping has an advantage over the other.

Cut Rule: Top 70 and ties move on after the first two rounds. There is no MDF in the FedEx Cup, even if more than 78 golfers make the cut.

Recent Winners of this Event: Rory McIlroy (2016), Rickie Fowler (2015), Chris Kirk (2014), Henrik Stenson (2013), Rory McIlroy (2012)
