Bryson DeChambeau ran away from the field last week to take the lead in the FedExCup and all but secure a Ryder Cup berth. While there are only three weeks left in the season, at least they will be star-studded weeks. The top 100 in the FedExCup rankings will play this week in Boston with the exception of two golfers who have already withdrawn — Rickie Fowler and Francesco Molinari. With the same cut rule as always (top 70 and ties move on), we are going to see at a minimum 71% of the golfers make the cut this week. This is certainly of note, as it should change our lineup building approach in DFS. With so many golfers making the cut, it devalues golfers that are consistent cut makers and increases the value of golfers that have upside.
This week’s event will be held at TPC Boston. It has been a staple on the PGA Tour for quite some time, so it’s a little sad that this event is going away after this season. The FedExCup will be cut down to three events next year, although TPC Boston will host the Northern Trust every few years. It’s a Par 71 that measures 7,342 yards. There are two very reachable par fives (530 and 542 yards) that must be taken advantage of. The par threes are all lengthy and five of the par fours measure at least 460 yards. If you look at the shot dispersion over the last five years, the three leading ranges are 150-175, 175-200, and 200+. This places an emphasis on long iron play (hello, Tiger).
As far as off the tee is concerned, I found an interesting stat with this course. Compared to the PGA Tour average, more fairways are hit and the average driving distance is higher. We typically see an inverse correlation between those two. We should see plenty of drivers this week, as these fairways average 38 yards wide (some of the widest on tour). The greens are fairly small and made of bentgrass. The greens are expected to play fast (hello, Tiger), even though the conditions may be soft with a few rainstorms in the forecast leading up to the tournaments. In order to contend this week, you have to be aggressive, which once again plays into the strategy of targeting boom or bust golfers.
If you can find a ball striker that can putt, you should feel good about his chances this week. One final note — the tournament will start on Friday this week. They always have this tournament finish on Labor Day. Be sure to check out all of our great premium content and good luck this week.
Cut Rule: Top 70 and ties move on after the first two rounds. There is no MDF in the FedExCup.
