Farmers Insurance Preview

Before we get into the course preview, a huge congratulations is in order. Hudson Swafford picked up his maiden victory at the CareerBuilder Challenge after a dominant back nine on Sunday. This week the PGA Tour stays in California for the Farmers Insurance Open. There are plenty of storylines heading into the week, but none bigger than the return of Tiger Woods. Woods did play at the Hero World Challenge, but that was not a PGA Tour event and there were only 18 golfers in the field. Woods returns to an event that he has dominated unlike any other. He has seven career victories at the Farmers Insurance Open and when most people think of Torrey Pines, they think of Woods. Joining Tiger in the field are 11 of the top 25 golfers in the world, which easily makes this the strongest field so far this season. We should note that Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler, and Byeong-Hun An all played last week in Abu Dhabi. I’m not saying that the travel will have an impact on their performance this week, but that information could come in handy in a tiebreaker scenario.

There were three golf courses in the rotation last week and there will be two in play this week – Torrey Pines North Course and Torrey Pines South Course. Each golfer will play each course once before the cut is made, then the tournament will finish at the South Course on Saturday and Sunday. Here is a quick description of each course:

North Course:

This is a Par 72 that measures 7,258 yards. It is a lot easier than the South Course, although the course was renovated after last years event. They added 200 yards of length, they widened the fairways, and they made the greens bigger. While it sounds like the course will play more difficult, most players say that the changes take a lot of hazards out of play. We should still expect this course to play three or four strokes easier than its counterpart.

South Course:

This is also a Par 72, although it is much longer than the North Course. It measures 7,698 yards, which makes it the longest active course on the PGA Tour. The fairways on this course are extremely tough to hit, so we definitely want to lean on distance over accuracy off the tee. If everyone is playing from the rough, we might as well take the golfers that are going to be hitting their approach shots closer to the hole.

I am going to be leaning heavily on course history this week, as the same golfers seem to pepper the leaderboard here each and every season. As I mentioned above, I am leaning more toward the bombers than the accuracy types off the tee, especially since three of the four days will be played at the South Course. As always, we want birdie makers and with four par fives on each course, we want to target golfers that can score on those holes. And as always, strokes gained tee to green will be relied on heavily.

Cut Rule:Top 70 and ties move on after the second round.

Recent Winners of this Event:Brandt Snedeker (2016 & 2012), Jason Day (2015), Scott Stallings (2014), Tiger Woods (2013)
