Event Preview
For the second week in a row, we had a golfer catch fire on Sunday and run away with the tournament. While most of the names at the top of the leaderboard faltered on the final day, Kevin Na shot six-under par to win the tournament by five strokes. It was his first win on tour since 2011 and he was very emotional in his post-round interview. It’s always great to see how much winning means to some of these golfers. It wasn’t a great week of DFS for yours truly. I had way too much J.B. Holmes, who couldn’t make a putt on Friday and ended up missing the cut by two strokes. This week we head to Silvis, Illinois for the John Deere Classic. This technically serves as a warm up for the Open Championship next week, although most of the big names are playing across the pond in the Scotish Open.
Year in and year out, this plays as one of the easiest events of the season. We typically see a winning score close to 20-under par, so you need to consistently make birdies if you are going to compete this week. TPC Deere Run is a Par 71 that measures 7,268 yards. It features three par fives, two of which are reachable by everyone in the field with a drive in the fairway. The tees, fairways, and greens are Bentgrass, while the rough is Kentucky Bluegrass. There are only three holes that feature water hazards and they generally don’t come into play. The course is known for its rolling hills and elevation changes, but this is a resort-style venue that the golfers will be able feast on. There will be plenty of birdies this week, golfers just have to avoid stringing together bogeys.
If you look at past statistics from this tournament, there are two that really jump off the page — strokes gained approach and strokes gained putting. Whether you are looking at the winners, top five, top ten, or top 20, they have all gained most of their strokes on approaches and on the greens. After a quick examination of the course layout, it’s easy to see why. Thes course features wide fairways and large greens. Each year, the field typically hits more than 70% of fairways and greens, which is well above the PGA Tour average. With everyone hitting fairways, it becomes a wedge contest. And with everyone hitting greens, it becomes a putting contest. The fact that Zach Johnson, Steve Stricker, and Wesley Bryan have all played so well here makes me feel great about the type of golfer that I am looking to target.
Good luck this week. I’ll have a more comprehensive course breakdown for next week’s Open Championship.
Cut Rule: Top 70 and ties move on after the first two rounds. The MDF rule is in effect if more than 78 golfers make the initial cut.
