Bryson DeChambeau won again on the PGA Tour. It’s been fun to watch his career evolve after breaking onto the scene at The Masters a few years back. Everyone annointed him the next big thing, but after an underwhelming sting on the PGA Tour, many wrote him off. He worked his way back and after picking up three wins in a span of three months, he’s vaulted all the way up to fifth in the Official World Golf Rankings. This week, the tour heads to Mexico for the Mayakoba Golf Classic (previously the OHL Classic). We have a pretty decent field, headlined by Rickie Fowler, Tony Finau, and Jordan Spieth.
El Camaleon Golf Club is a resort style Par 71 that measures 6,987 yards. Even though we don’t have ShotTracker for this week’s event, this is one of the better events to watch on television. There are very few golf courses in the world that have jungle areas on one side and the beach on the other side. The course’s main defense is the weather. When it picks up, the course can play fairly difficult. With little wind, the course turns into a birdie fest. That’s not to say that big numbers won’t be made here. With plenty of water hazards and jungle areas that golfers can hit into off the tees, be prepared for penalty strokes.
The course features three par fives and is extremely short for a Par 71. Even though the fairways are somewhat narrow, driving accuracy here is higher than the PGA Tour average. This is largely because many golfers choose to club down off the tee on many holes. It sets up as more of a second shot golf course, which is why we’ve seen so many shorter hitters compete here over the years. We don’t need to rule out the bombers, but they need to be good with their irons to compete this week. The greens are made of seashore paspalum grass, which will provide a challenge for the golfers, since this is not a type of grass that they see very often. If you can find a good ball striker that gets hot with the flat stick, you’ll be on the right track this week.
Cut Rule: Top 70 and ties move on after the first two rounds. The MDF rule is in effect if more than 78 golfers make the initial cut.
