This week the PGA Tour heads to the beautiful Playa Del Carmen, which is just outside of Cancun, Mexico. This is always a fun tournament to watch on television because the scenery is spectacular and you really don’t feel bad for anyone in the field, even if they miss the cut. Is there a better way to drown your sorrows after a missed cut then to head down to Cancun for a couple of nights? The event will be held at the El Camaleon Golf Club, which is a Par 71 that measures 7,039 yards. This is one of the shorter tracks that the players will see all season, especially when you factor in that there are still three par fives on the course. This course used to play a bit tougher when the event was played during February, but since moving to November, it has been a birdie fest. Four of the last five winners here have shot at least 17-under par.
We generally like to target golfers that dominate off the tee and score on the par fives, but that’s not the case this week. While that doesn’t mean that a bomber can’t win here, they will need to keep it in the fairway. The fairways are surrounded by dense marsh areas that you can’t really play out of. We should see plenty of birdies this week, but there will be a lot of penalties on the scorecard as well. With this being such a short course, I will be looking to target the players that are accurate with their driver. Driving accuracy is in play, although I generally prefer to use good drive percentage, because it includes drives that are still good enough to reach the green in regulation. Preferably, we want to target an accurate driver of the ball that gains strokes on the field tee to green. I am also factoring in birdie or better percentage, par four scoring, and a little bit of putting.
Cut Rule:Top 70 and ties will move on to play the final two rounds.
Recent Winners of this Event: Graeme McDowell (2015), Charley Hoffman (2014), Harris English (2013), John Huh (2012), Johnson Wagner (2011)
