I am so happy for Patrick Cantlay. Not only is he one of my favorite golfers on tour, but he helped me make a nice little profit last week. We now head to Playa del Carmen for the OHL Classic. The city is located near Cancun and is one of the best vacation spots in Mexico. The event will be held at El Camaleón Golf Club, which is a Par 71 that measures 6,987 yards. It features three par fives that should be reachable by nearly everyone in the field and six par fours that measure between 400-450 yards. I’ve created a new table to show the length of every hole on the course to get an idea of what the golfers will be facing this week:
The “Chameleon” name comes from the three different landscapes on the course. It is truly unique, as golfers will see tropical jungle, dense mangroves, and the ocean all on the same course. This was designed by Greg Norman, but it isn’t as difficult as most of his tracks. This is a resort course, so Norman couldn’t make it overly difficult. In the last five years, the winners have finishes with scores of -21, -18, -17, -21, and -13. One of the course’s main defenses is the wind, which is not expected to be a factor this week. The other defense is the number of hazards. Water is in play on half of the holes and it’s nearly impossible to hit out of the forest and mangroves. There is no Shot Tracker this week, but we do get a little description with each shot. It will say “Shot 2 from the fairway,” which is better than nothing.
Seeing as how the course measures under 7,000 yards, we will see a lot of golfers club down off the tee. There aren’t nearly as many drivers hit here as there are on most golf courses, which places a greater emphasis on the approach game. If you hit it into the rough, it’s not a big issue, but you can’t be too wild off the tee or you will find trouble. As long as golfers keep it in play, this will come down to a wedge contest. It’s never bad to have course history on your side, but four of the last six winners of this event were debutants of the event. It’s also worth noting that eight of the last ten winners were over the age of 30. The young bombers don’t have the same edge here, as their biggest weapon will stay in their bag on a lot of holes.
There isn’t a ton to add other than the fact that the greens are seashore paspalum grass and are very slow. They are expected to be around 10.5 on the stimpmeter. We’ve seen a number of bad putters perform well here, so I’m really just looking for golfers with a strong approach game that can take advantage of the par fives.
Cut Rule:Top 70 and ties move on after the first two rounds. The MDF rule is in effect if more than 78 golfers make the initial cut.
