Wow, what a Sunday finish we had at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Kevin Kisner appeared to be able to coast to a victory after the front nine, but a few mistakes and a great charge by Marc Leishman changed everything on the last few holes. Leishman dropped a 50-foot eagle putt on the par five 15th and then made a tremendous up and down on the difficult 18th to par the hole put the pressure on Kisner. In the end, Leishman claimed his second career PGA Tour victory. For what it’s worth, this wasn’t a choke job by Kisner. He was a bit unlucky in the final round, so I have full confidence the next time he is in a similar situation. Other notable top ten finishes included Rory McIlroy, Tyrell Hatton, Adam Hadwin, Emiliano Grillo, and Francesco Molinari.
We have a rare two-tournament event this week. The best golfers in the world will all convene in Austin, Texas for the WGC-Dell Match Play. The sites would have to alter the scoring format drastically to make it playable for DFS. With that event not in play, FanDuel and DraftKings are going to offer contests for the uber-exciting Puerto Rico Open. This is an official PGA Tour event, but it is probably the weakest field that we will see all season. With that said, there is still a golf event and there is still DFS, so I will certainly be making my lineups in usual fashion.
The Puerto Rico Open is held at the Coco Beach Golf Club that is a Par 72 that measures just over 7,500 yards. There is water on play on nearly two-thirds of the holes and the course features over 30 greenside bunkers. Aesthetically speaking, this is a very nice course. Half of the holes are right by the ocean and the other half feature a jungle as the background. The greens are Paspalum and it sounds like they are playing extremely slow. Imagine what the greens at Augusta are like and then think of the exact opposite. This is typically one of the windiest events that we see on the PGA Tour, but it sounds like we have to worry more about the rain than the wind.
On paper, a 7,500 yard course screams bomber’s paradise. However, a lot of the par fours force players to club down and if we look at past leaderboards, we can see a number of accurate hitter’s with good course history. With the conditions expected to be somewhat soggy thanks to the rain, I am giving a slight edge to bombers over accuracy. However, the statistic that I’ll be looking at is strokes gained off the tee. Distance is good, but we don’t want players that are going to spray their drives into the water or jungle. Scoring on par fives is going to be critical and we always want to target birdie makers.
