Open Championship Recap

stenson1

Wow, just wow. The show that Henrik Stenson put on was absolutely incredible. Phil Mickelson played so well that he should feel robbed that he didn’t hoist his second Claret Jug after his final round on Sunday. It was a two-man race all Sunday and both golfers stepped up to the challenge. Stenson finished with a final round of 63, which tied the low round at any major during any round. The crazy part is that Mickelson also shot a 63 last week, although his came on Thursday afternoon when there wasn’t nearly as much pressure. It was good to see Stenson finally get the major monkey off of his back. There were some impressive showings from J.B. Holmes and Steve Stricker, finishing third and fourth. It was also nice to see two of the up and comers on the European Tour finish inside the top ten – Tyrell Hatton and Andrew “Beef” Johnston.

RBC Canadian Open Preview

There is always a bit of a letdown after a major, but we have a pretty strong field for the Canadian Open this week. That is in large part thanks to the fact that all of the members of Team RBC will be in attendance. Of the top 50 golfers in the world, 13 will be in the field this week. Jason Day and Dustin Johnson, who are ranked first and second, respectively, are both in the field. There are only 12 Canadians in the field and we shouldn’t expect a winner to come from this group. A Canadian hasn’t won this event in over 50 years. Their best shot at claiming their own Open lies in the hands of David Hearn, Graham DeLaet, and Adam Hadwin.

It’s important to remember that this event constantly changes venues. This year it will be held at Glen Abbey Country Club in Ontario, Canada. This was the first course that Jack Nicklaus designed by himself and there seems to be a correlation between golfers that play well on Jack Nicklaus and Pete Dye designs (cough, cough, Matt Kuchar). If you are looking at course history, the Canadian Open was held here in 2015, 2013, 2009, 2008, and 2004. This will actually mark the 28th time that this event will be played here. Glen Abbey is a Par 72 that measures 7,253 yards. It features 12 par fours, four par fives, and four par threes.

There are nearly 100 bunkers on the course and a number of water hazards as well. Putting your ball in the right spots will be key – both off the tee and on approaches. In the past, total drivers of the ball have performed well on this course. I will factor that in this week, as well as the new Strokes Gained Off the Tee statistic. We should also look for birdie makers that can score on the par fives. There are four very reachable par fives on this course, so taking advantage of them is key. Most of the scoring this week will come from the par fives. The one final note is that five of the past six winners have come from behind at this event; so don’t count your chickens before they hatch if you have the 54-hole leader in your lineup.

Cut Rule: Top 70 and ties will move on after the first two rounds.

Recent Winners of this Event: Jason Day (2015), Tim Clark (2014), Brandt Sneaker (2013), Scott Piercy (2012), Sean O’Hair (2011)
