Travelers Championship Recap

Russell Knox completed a nice comeback win on Sunday to claim his second win of the season, but the real story on Sunday was Jim Furyk. He shot a 12-under par round and became the first golfer in PGA Tour history to shoot a 58. He was dialed in all day and every single putt seemed to find the bottom of the cup. The craziest tidbit from last week was that Furyk and Daniel Berger ended up tying for fifth place, even though Furyk was 16 shots behind to start the final round.

Rio Olympics Preview

I was a little sad when I saw the focus for the week was going to be on the Olympics. I know that people love the Olympics and all, but there should be bigger contests for the actual PGA Tour event, which is the John Deere Classic. As a content provider, we need to follow the lead of DraftKings though, so most of our content will focus on the tournament in the Olympics. My hope is that DraftKings will see the demand for both tournaments and offer some larger GPPs for the John Deere in the next day or two.

Now, onto the Olympics. Even though we are missing some of the top golfers in the world, this is still a star-studded field that should be a really fun event to watch. Hopefully, we can get better coverage than we did for the PGA Championship (where we couldn’t even see coverage of the first few hours of the final two rounds). None of the players in the field have ever seen or played this course because it was built specifically for the Olympics. There have been reports of massive rodents and snakes on the course, which should provide an added obstacle for the golfers this week.

The Olympic Golf Course is a Par 71 that measures 7,128 yards. Without a dive further into the course, you would expect there to be only three par fives on a Par 71, but that’s not the case. There are four par fives and five par threes. This course is short and it doesn’t feature a whole lot of trouble other than some native grassy areas. It should play more like a links style course and we could see some really low scores. It’s obviously anyone’s guess at this point, but don’t be surprised if the winning score is around 20-under par.

Cut Rule: With only 60 golfers in the field, there is no cut for the Olympics.

Recent Winners of this Event: It has been a while since golf was in the Olympics. We have to go all the way back to 1904 when George Lyon from Canada took home the gold medal.
