Course Preview

After a beautiful week in Playa Del Carmen, the PGA Tour heads to Saint Simons Island in Georgia for the RSM Classic. This event used to be called the McGladery Classic, so if you are wondering why you can’t find course history before 2014, now you know. The event will be held at two different courses this year – the Seaside Course and Plantation Course at Sea Island. Golfers will alternate courses the first two days before the cut is made; then the final two rounds will both be played at the Seaside Course. It should be noted that last year was the first time trying out the two-course approach. The previous installments were all held at the Seaside course. This is where many PGA Tour members live and/or train. This week’s field is loaded with golfers that have a home-field advantage.

Here is a quick description of the two courses:

Seaside Course: 7,005-yard Par 70 that features two par fives.

Plantation Course: 7,058-yard Par 72 that features four par fives.

Last season, the Plantation Course played nearly a stroke easier than the Seaside Course, which isn’t a surprise considering the fact that it has two more par fives. Both of these courses are on the shorter end of the tour spectrum and with the courses expected to be dry, distance off the tee is not a premium this week. We want to target golfers that can keep it in the fairway and give themselves plenty of opportunities for birdies. If you look at past winners and other players that have been successful here, very few of them are considered bombers off the tee. Putting has played a big role in this event in the past, but it is the most volatile stat week-to-week. All I’m looking for this week is an accurate, tee-to-green golfer that makes a lot of birdies. A nice course history here doesn’t hurt either.

Cut Rule:Top 70 and ties will move on after the first two rounds.
