Event Preview
The wait is finally over. The PGA Tour is back in action this week. We head to the beautiful Plantation Course at Kapalua in Hawaii. As you may have noticed, this event is called the tournament of champions and only golfers that won on tour last year were invited to play. There are only 34 golfers in the field this week, so the event won’t feature a cut. We’ll get back to having the Friday cut sweat next week at the Sony Open.
The Plantation Course is unique in that it is the only Par 73 course on the PGA Tour. Most courses feature four par threes, but this one only has three of them. There are four par fives, three par threes, and 11 par fours. The total length of the course (7,411 yards) seems daunting, but this course doesn’t play nearly that long. We will see plenty of 400 yard drives and even the shorter hitters will be getting it out there quite a ways. The course features extremely wide fairways (some of the widest on tour), which sets up on paper as a bomber course. However, we’ve seen shorter hitters compete here year in and year out. The course actually favors those who are deadly with their approach shots and great around the greens. In fact, 18 of the last 20 winners here were ranked tenth or better in scrambling.
Given the exposed nature of the course, it’s best defense is the wind. In a few of the past editions, there has been little to no wind, which has led to some incredibly low scoring. It looks like the wind could be a much bigger factor this year with steady 16+ MPH winds Thursday through Sunday. There isn’t going to be a major advantage for tee times because there are only 34 golfers and the tee times aren’t spread out very far, but we definitely want to give an edge to golfers that play well in the wind (cough — Marc Leishman). We also want to give an edge to golfers that putt well on Bermuda grass. While the fairways and greens are both easy to hit, there are a lot of three-putts on this golf course.
Even with the wind, I expect this to be another birdie fest. Over the last seven editions of this event, the scoring average is 70.48, which is two and a half strokes below par. With no cut, we want to target golfers that can score on the par fives and on the shorter par fours (six of them measure less than 400 yards). I’m also giving a slight bump to anyone that has played this course at least once. Outside of the best golfers in the world, first timers tend to struggle at this event.
