We are back on U.S. soil and we have ShotTracker back in our lives. While I enjoyed watching golf at midnight, I’m ready to sweat every shot early Thursday morning. I’m also ready for the cut sweat on Friday, as this is the first tournament that we’ve seen with a cut in the last few weeks (other than Sanderson Farms). This week we head to Las Vegas for the Shriners Hospital for Children Open. Shriners is a network of 22 hospitals offering pediatric care that specializes in orthopedic, burn and spinal cord rehabilitation. There are over 1,000 volunteers that run the tournament and the proceeds go to a good cause. Speaking of good causes, Charley Hoffman has agreed to donate his tournament earnings to the victims of the Las Vegas shooting.
TPC Summerlin is a Par 71 that measures 7,255 yards. The course is a bit longer than the ones that we’ve seen recently, but the higher elevation will negate that a bit. There are three par fives on the course, two of which are reachable by most of the field. The 15th hole is a drivable par four that should provide a fun finish and there are six par fours that play between 400-450 yards. We should see plenty of approach shots between 125-175 yards. This is a course where you can pull driver on most of the holes, but I wouldn’t call it a bomber’s track. If you look at any of the leaderboards from the last few editions, we’ve seen a number of shorter hitters play well here. The key is to put the ball in the fairway, but distance is still an advantage if you can keep it in the short grass.
There are a few water hazards in play on the course and quite a few “native areas” that consist of sand, bushes, and cacti. This is always a fun tournament because the scores are low and it’s played in the desert with the Vegas strip in the background. Six of the last seven winners here finished at least 20-under par and in terms of difficulty (with one being the most difficult), this course has ranked 40th or easier in seven of the last eight years. This is a great tournament for golfers to pick up their first win on tour. In fact, ten of the last 15 winners here were first-timers (in terms of winning, not playing the course). If you are looking for a comp course, TPC Scottsdale (Arizona) makes a lot of sense and we’ve seen the same golfers play well at both tracks throughout the years.
As far as the type of golfer that I’m looking to target, you won’t be suprised when I say that I’m focusing on ball strikers. Solid off the tee and approach games will be critical and I’ll be looking at those stats from long-term and short-term perspectives. Golfers will need to score on the par fives to compete and they’ll need to putt well on these bentgrass greens. Seeing as how this will be a birdie-fest, we obviously want to target scorers over plodders. That should just about do it for this week. There are only three PGA tournaments left in the calendar year and then we get to see Tiger Woods back in action at the Hero World Challenge. All I want is to see Tiger back at Augusta, so hopefully the golf gods will oblige.
Good luck this week!
Cut Rule: Top 70 and ties will move on after the first two rounds. The MDF rule is in effect if more than 78 golfers make the original cut.
