Wyndham Championship Recap

SiWoo

Si Woo Kim, who has been referred to as a Jordan Spieth-like golfer, ran away with the field at the Wyndham Championship. We have seen the talent all year, but we finally saw it come all together for Kim. He ended up winning by five strokes in what was his maiden PGA Tour victory. Other notable finishes inside the top ten were Hideki Matsuyama, Brandt Snedeker, Billy Horschel, Graeme McDowell, Rafa Cabrera-Bello, Kevin Kisner, and Jim Furyk – talk about a star-studded leaderboard. I also wanted to hit on Shawn Stefani, who sank a six-foot putt on his final hole on Sunday to keep his PGA Tour card. As fans of DFS, we tend to see the results and not think about the consequences. These golfers are out here fighting for their jobs each and every week. It was really cool to see Stefani get so emotional after securing his card for next season.

The Barclays Preview

Welcome to the FedExCup Championship!

In case this is your first year playing golf in daily fantasy, the FedExCup Championship is a four week event that eventually crowns a champion. The size of the field diminishes each week, starting with 125 at The Barclays, 100 at the Deutsche Bank Championship, 70 at the BMW Championship, and then 30 will move on to play the Tour Championship. If you are watching any television coverage this week, you will be bombarded with constant updates about where each golfer is projected to finish in the standings if the tournament ended at that exact moment. All of the top 125 players will be in attendance this week, with the exception of Sergio Garcia, Danny Willett, and Shane Lowry.

JasonDayB

The Barclays rotates venues each year, so if you are a course history buff, make sure to take note of that. Jason Day won The Barclays last season, but it was played on a different course. The last time the event was played at Bethpage Black was in 2012. The previous tournament that the course hosted was the 2009 U.S. Open. So basically, we don’t have a lot of course history to look at this week. Bethpage Black is a Par 71 course that measures 7,468 yards. That number should immediately stand out, as it will be one of the longest courses played on tour this season. It features three par fives and multitude of par fours that measure over 450 yards. This course is going to play tough, as it was the 15th hardest course on tour back in 2012. It features narrow fairways, thick rough, and tough to hit greens. In fact in 2012, players hit only 62.4% of fairways and 61.8% of greens that week.

Even though we don’t have a ton of course history to analyze, we do know the profile of the type of golfer that succeeds at Bethpage Black. Lucas Glover and Nick Watney were the last two players to win here and both are excellent ball strikers. Due to the length of the course, it certainly isn’t going to hurt having distance off the tee. Hitting greens will be critical this week and when players miss, they are going to need to get up and down out of the rough and/or sand traps. I am placing a bigger emphasis on tee to green game than I am on putting, as we have seen bad putters perform well here. In 2012, golfers made over 96% of their putts within five feet, which should help these bad putters avoid three-putting. We should also be looking for players that are in good form and that have added motivation to play well, whether it be a last push for the Ryder Cup team or if they are on the bubble for next week’s Deutsche Bank Championship.

Cut Rule: The top 70 and ties will move on after the first two rounds.

Recent Winners of this Event: Jason Day won The Barclays last season, but it was held at a different venue. The last two PGA tournaments that were held at Bethpage Black were won by Nick Watney (2012 – The Barclays) and Lucas Glover (2009 – U.S. Open).
