Event Preview
The PGA Tour heads to Texas this week for the Valero Texas Open. While there are a few big names that headline the field, this is one of the weakest that we will see the rest of the season. This event has been played at the AT&T Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio since 2010. If you are a course history buff like myself, make sure to throw out any results before 2010. This is typically one of the toughest stops on the PGA Tour, largely thanks to the wind. It’s still early in the week, but forecasts show double-digit winds for all four days of the tournament. It could be a great week to stack tee times (both sides in tournaments), so be sure to check the weather late Wednesday night.
The AT&T Oaks course is a Par 72 that measures 7,435 yards. It typically plays firm and fast and many Australians say that it reminds them of the courses that they play at home. This is a long course, so it will require distance off the tee. It’s not a complete bomber’s track though, as the rough here can be penal. There are also a number of hazards in play off the tee. Rather than focusing on distance, I will be favoring the total drivers (combination of distance and accuracy). The greens are made of Bermudagrass and are multi-tiered with plenty of undulation. They are a little easier to hit than the greens last week, but that could change if the wind picks up.
As mentioned above, this is not going to be a birdie fest. It has ranked inside the top ten in terms of difficult in three of the last five seasons. I always like to lean on ball strikers when the wind picks up, as they are able to control their ball better than those that rely on a strong short game. I will be looking at par five scoring as well, although it’s worth noting that only one of the par fives is reachable by the entire field. The other three are only reachable by the longest of hitters and it will take two great shots to get there. Given the fact that scoring will be tough, I may lean toward bogey avoidance instead of birdie or better percentage this week.
As always, be sure to check out our great premium content. Good luck this week.
Cut Rule: The top 70 and ties move on after the first two rounds. The MDF rule is in effect if more than 78 golfers make the initial cut.
