Course Preview

The PGA Tour stays in Florida this week for the Valspar Championship. This event has had many names throughout the years, but it is always played at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort. If you remember back to last season, this is where Jordan Spieth claimed his first victory of the season, after beating Patrick Reed and Sean O’Hair in a playoff. This is the event that really catapulted Speith to one of the most historic seasons in recent memory.

The Copperhead Course is a Par 71 that measures just over 7,300 yards. This is not your typical Par 71 layout, as there are four par fives and five par threes. This is a course that is all about angles. Hitting the fairway is nice, but more importantly, you have to be on the right side of the hole to be able to attack these pins.

Many will say that driving accuracy is key this week, but the bombers aren’t going to be hitting drivers on many of these holes. When players hit less than driver off the tee, their accuracy goes way up. We have seen some longer players play well here in the past, so I’m not too keen on driving accuracy this week. I’m more looking for players that are solid tee to green that are great with their long irons (200+ yards). Course history should also be heavily weighted, as the same players do well here each and every season.

Cut Rule: Top 70 and ties will move on and play the weekend after the second round is completed.

Recent Winners of this Event: Jordan Spieth (2015), John Senden (2014), Kevin Streelman (2013), Luke Donald (2012), Gary Woodland (2011)

Weather: I always recommend trusting the actual weatherman (Kevin Roth) who posts a thread in the forum each week, but since he won’t have that out until Wednesday, I’ll take a stab at it. Rain shouldn’t be a big issue this week, but it does look like it could be windy. Winds will be around 15 MPH on Thursday and 12-14 MPH the rest of the week. If there is a disparity between tee time groupings, you want to be on the right side of it.
