John Deere Classic Recap

Ryan Moore picked up his fifth PGA Tour win last week at the John Deere Classic. He was rounding into form after a T17 at the Travelers Championship and pretty much ran away from the field last week. Ben Martin and Morgan Hoffmann both made a run at it, but both fell short and Moore ended up winning with two strokes to spare. It was good to see Moore pick up another win, especially since he was featured in my expert picks that were available to all incentives members. Highlights from the final round also included two 64’s from Kevin Na and Adam Hadwin, both of whom are in the field this week for the Wyndham Championship.
Wyndham Championship Preview
This week the PGA Tour heads to Greensboro, North Carolina for the Wyndham Championship. This is an important week for a lot of golfers, as it is the final week before the FedExCup Playoffs. The top 125 golfers in the FedExCup standings will be eligible to participate in next week’s Barclays. Throughout the week, you are going to hear announcers constantly point out what golfers on the bubble are going to need to do to make it into the top 125. If you are a fan of playing narratives, it could be a good week to target the golfers that are right on the bubble, as they have a lot to play for.

The Wyndham Championship is held at Sedgefield Country Club, which is a Par 70 that measures 7,130 yards. This course was designed by Donald Ross and is known as one of the shorter tracks on tour. The fairways are fairly easy to hit, although the greens are smaller than your average greens on tour. That hasn’t been a big problem in the past though, as golfers have averaged a GIR of 73% at this track since 2008. We have a stacked field this week with 17 of the top 50 golfers in the world. The odds on favorite to win is Patrick Reed, who claimed his maiden PGA Tour victory here in 2013.
In the past, we have seen a nice mix of both short and long drivers of the ball play well here. This is more of a second shot golf course, so players need to be able to stick it close to the pin. Rather than targeting distance or length, I am giving a hard look to ball strikers this week. Putting is obviously important, but week-to-week it has the most variance of any statistic, which makes is very difficult to predict each tournament. With only two par fives on the course, I will also be placing a weight on par four scoring. As always, strokes gained tee to green and birdie or better % will be important as well.
Cut Rule: Top 70 and ties will move on after the first two rounds. The MDF rule is in effect if more than 78 players make the initial cut.
Recent Winners of this Event: Davis Love III (2015), Camilo Villegas (2014), Patrick Reed (2013), Sergio Garcia (2012), Webb Simpson (2011)
