Fort Worth Invitational
Welcome back, golf fans! We have our weekly PGA Tour stop this week on the final leg of the Texas Swing. This week’s tournament will be held at Colonial Country Club for the Fort Worth Invitational, formerly the DEAN & DELUCA Invitational, formerly the Crowne Plaza Invitational, formerly the MasterCard Invitational, formerly the… you get the picture. Sponsorship has changed often for this event, but the one constant has been the course. Colonial has been the host site for this event since 1946, as the inaugural two editions were both won by Ben Hogan.
The course has withstood the test of time, even as golf balls, golf clubs, and other technology has helped players get better on the golf course. It’s a traditional par 70 layout that doesn’t offer much in the way of length, but the course can be very challenging, especially when the Texas winds pick up. The short par five first hole is the only real pushover on the course, and golfers are well advised to try and make birdie or eagle on that hole before the rest of the course greets them. The one benefit for the golfers this week is that the winds are expected to be surprisingly calm, so we might see better scoring conditions than we have in recent years.
