Sony Open in Hawaii
Welcome back, Grinders! While last week was a fun way to get things rolling for the new decade, the season really arrives this week with the first full field event of 2020 with the Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club.
This tournament has been contested at Waialae ever since its inception in 1965. If course history is your thing, feel free to dig in for this event — because there is no shortage of it. As for the course itself, Waialae sets up as your traditional ball striking paradise. It is a short par 70 course that measures just over 7,000 yards from the tips, and that is very short by today’s PGA Tour standards. Given the fact that the wind often blows on the islands, too, it’s no wonder that those who can pepper fairways and greens with more regularity are the ones who tend to succeed. It’s also a course with tighter fairways than what we will see on many of today’s PGA Tour stops, so distance is not a priority on this course.
