The CJ Cup at Nine Bridges

Welcome back to the PGA GPP breakdown! We are coming off a fun shootout in Kuala Lumpur, where Marc Leishman fired off a remarkable score of 26-under par to win by five strokes. 71 of the 78 golfers in the field finished under par, and we saw birdies and eagles in bunches. The PGA Tour shifts to Korea this week for the CJ Cup, and this event is being played for the second time at Nine Bridges.

Scoring was very difficult in the debut edition of this event a year ago, but those results are a little deceiving. The field averaged more than a stroke under par in the first round before averaging about two strokes over par over the final three rounds thanks to high winds. The weather is expected to be a little calmer this year, and scoring will also likely be buoyed by the fact that many players are seeing the venue for a second time. With this being a similar short par 72 layout (comparable to what we saw last week), I wouldn’t be surprised to see a winning score between 15 and 20-under par here after the winner finished at just -9 a year ago.

The four par fives on this layout measure at 550, 589, 598, and 568 yards on the scorecard, so many of them will be reachable in two for the bigger hitters. I will prioritize par five scoring quite a bit this week, while scrambling also takes on some importance on a course where the field struggled with greens in regulation last year (though some of that can be attributed to the wind). As usual, ball striking can also be a key to success, as the fairways and greens approach plays well on any course.
