THE PLAYERS Championship

Greetings, golf Grinders! We have the “fifth major” this week, as the PGA Tour heads to TPC Sawgrass for THE PLAYERS Championship. While the title of “fifth major” bugs me to no end, I won’t waste your time ranting about it in this space. Either your tournament is a major or it’s not. Figure it out! (For what it’s worth, its not). Regardless of your opinion on that matter, the point is that we do have a fun tournament this week with a lot of DFS action available. Let’s get to breaking it down!

There are a couple of statistical angles I am looking at this week. First off, TPC Sawgrass is a ball striking paradise. There is water in play on almost every hole, and it is prominently featured on the closing holes on the back nine. Of course, the iconic island green at the par-three 17th hole gets all the attention, but the 18th hole is among the most difficult closing holes in golf. You will need to hold on tightly if one of your golfers is straddling the cut line with 17 and 18 yet to play on Friday! However, even though this course is catered to ball striking and approach play, par five scoring is also important to me. Most of the scoring will come on the four par fives on this course. When you combine those with the short par four 12th hole, which is reachable from the tee with some pin setups, that is where you will see most of the scoring. Those were the only five holes to play under par a year ago, and it’s almost assured that the remaining 13 holes will all play at or over par. As such, par five scoring is also a big part of my weighting this week.
