Masters week! What we’ve all been waiting for! More research probably went into this week than any other this year, and lots of new players digesting LOTS of articles and research to carefully craft their lineups for the week! Let’s see what we’ve got!!
Rory McIlroy (40% GPP, 52% Cash) – Not a huge surprise, with Dustin Johnson injuring himself the day before the event, the easiest move to make was to lump your money onto Rory instead. I did this in several places, as I had those two clearly the cream of the crop, and figured I would differentiate elsewhere. It’s a massive ownership for a millionaire maker contest, BUT, with the late news, a lot of people had their hands tied and not much room for major strategic re-thinkings. Rory would have been one of the top few highest owned golfers, anyway, but the DJ news put him over the top for sure.
Jordan Spieth (30% GPP, 18% Cash) – Spieth is the other “benefactor” of the DJ news in my mind, I didn’t expect him to be QUITE this high coming off of a missed cut in Houston. Everyone knows he’s been gearing up for this since last year, and he would have been up there, but a few of those percentage points had to have come from DJ late-swaps as well. We can see a lot of mis-trust for Jordan at that high salary with only 18% in cash games but a lot of people who didn’t want to be sitting on the sidelines if he cruised through the course like he did for the first 60+ holes last year.
Jon Rahm (32% GPP, 52% Cash) – A rookie can’t win? Who cares!? Rahm isn’t your average rookie, he’s taken the TOUR by storm and his game suits the Masters incredibly well. The price on DraftKings was kind of stale and I, like many, simply could not stay away from a big chunk of exposure to him, and a mandatory cash-game presence. Even if the rookie were to falter on Sunday under pressure like the lore would predict, he could still be a worthwhile play.
Justin Rose (26% GPP, 53% Cash) – The highest owned cash game golfer, Rose represented a sweet-spot salary-wise, with soft pricing this week you could afford him and still cram in some other stars. We see his cash game ownership very high as he has come to represent some semblance of consistency at this point in his career – but that is a fickle thing in golf.
Dustin Johnson (8% GPP, 3% Cash) – This was an interesting one, and obviously most people played it right in hindsight. We’ve KIND OF seen situations like this before where golfers would still perform well after an injury, but this seemed pretty serious, and it turns out it was, with DJ withdrawing right before his tee time. I understand people taking pot-shots especially with multiple lineups in the milly, but the 3% in cash games represents a little bit of free juice for the rest of us!
Drink it up! And good luck this week everyone!
