And we have a co-ownerships matrix that shows who the highest owned pairs of golfers were in this week’s $3 Birdie:
Jon Rahm (28% GPP, 45% Cash) – He’s baaaaaaack! We knew it wouldn’t take too much love to get Mr. Rahm back atop of our hearts! He’s added a win to his Mr. Consistency title that he earned very early in his still-young career, and people still find him undervalued. I would say rightly so, and his first round performance agrees. A lot will be swayed on whether or not he can keep up the early hot start!
Henrik Stenson (27% GPP, 57% Cash) – The ORIGINAL Mr. Consistency was the guy most people chose to start their lineups off with in cash games this week. A slightly lower salary than the other big names, and a scorching hot recent form (top 10 in six out of the last six starts) combine for an almost no-brainer in cash games, according to the masses. His withdrawal is a killer.
Sergio Garcia (25% GPP, 55% Cash) – Almost identical numbers to King Henrik, as I’ve noted here before, Sergio continues to be a fan favorite, and I suspect many lineups included him and Stenson both in cash games. The Spaniard has been dethroned by Jon Rahm as the most popular FANTASY golfer this week ,but he’s still going strong as the core of many people’s lineup, and is bolstered by a win in Dubai a few weeks ago.
Jordan Spieth (24% GPP, 15% Cash) – Finally, people are hitching their wagons to Spieth again in GPP. This follows the typical pattern of people wanting to start lineups with a “Tier 1-A” guy instead of the very-highest-salary guys in cash games, to build a more balanced lineup – but that’s a strategy that might be less applicable in a WGC field. It’s a slight difference, but something worth noting. Can’t argue with anyone who wanted Stenson or Rahm or Sergio in cash but wanted to make sure they had a chunk of Spieth lineups in GPP just in case he wins it all. Almost a quarter of the crowd wanted insurance against that “doh!” moment where they could have five great golfers and be one Jordan Spieth away from a bunch of money, and I can’t blame them.
Brooks Koepka (1.8% GPP, 0.4% Cash) – Let’s take one glance at the other side of the spectrum. Oh how the mighty have fallen! BK closed last season extremely strong, but has missed three of the last four cuts. Everyone avoided him this week, but he’s a guy that we know has all the talent in the world. This week doesn’t look to be his bounce-back week, with him shooting +5 day one, BUT, that just sets up for a future mega-low-ownership streak where we can all try to throw money at him at $7,000 and 2% owned! Sign me up.
Good luck guys. See you next week!
