PGA Projected Ownership: Safeway Open

rotogrinders_user_23086

Welcome back everyone. The 2016-2017 PGA season kicks off this week in Napa, CA with the Safeway Open. Let’s get to it!

Editor’s Note: In the near future, subscribers to DraftKings PGA Premium content will have access to all current week and historical pOwn% data. Updates will be made throughout the week due to injury news, tout activity, odds/line movement, weather/tee-times, etc. But for this week, focusing on the $33 DK Dogleg, everyone has access to everything. Enjoy!

This Week’s Tweaks:

We all loved the Ryder Cup and FedEx playoffs, but it feels great to be working with a full field again. It’s a weaker field, I’ve heard it dubbed “a glorified Web.com tour event” on several occasions this week. Our two American Ryder Cup heroes in the field will undoubtedly be going through the motions in an obvious let-down situation. Corporate Phil may be treating this week as a networking/gambling/business trip.

There are some solid PGA Tour players in the field, but there’s lots of buzz about the Web.com Tour grads. And DFSers are trying to find the next Emiliano Grillo, who if you recall, won this event last year to begin his PGA Tour career. A common narrative: The established PGA Tour member may still be reflecting on last season, finding it hard to get motivated for this smaller tourney. Whereas the Web.com Tour rook is extremely motivated to make a splash ASAP. Most of the rooks will crash and burn, but a few have shown well in this event over the last two years.

The Safeway Open’s weak field is contrasted by the anticipated strong field of DFS players. On a percentage basis, we should have a very high population of “sharps” in play this week, perhaps the highest in the last 12 months. We all hoped for some NFL overflow into fantasy golf, but it doesn’t appear likely.

We could have some weather in play, with rain forecasted to arrive on Thursday night. Early week forecasts suggested an edge for the Thursday Morning/Friday Afternoon wave, but now it looks like no rain on Thursday and rain off and on all day Friday. Keep an eye on the weather.

We will be focusing on the DK $200K ($33 entry) Dogleg this week.

Upper Tier ($9K +):

Paul Casey (37% pOwn%): His recent form is off the charts. Even the “sharps” are going to find it difficult to fade Casey as he is popping on models everywhere. Casey was great chasing down the Big Four throughout the FedEx playoffs. How will he react to being chased and hunted by all the Web.com rooks? Casey is rested, in contrast to his cheaper salary neighbors Kucher and Corporate Phil who are still unwinding from the uber-stressful Ryder Cup. Casey ranks #3 on our Tout Buzz meter and should be anchoring gobs of “stars and scrubs” rosters.

Jon Rahm (19% pOwn%): Rahm was an awesome shiny new DFS toy a few months ago. But we’ve not seen him in a while. And if we do recall our last ride on the Rahm train, it sucked: CUT in the Wyndham at 27% GPP ownership. The models and spreadsheets tell us to play Rahm, but he is surrounded by more enticing plays: Grillo, J. Thomas, and Na. Line movement has been good for Grillo, JT and Rahm. Ultimately, they should all carry similar ownership.

Roberto Castro (12% pOwn% and falling): Castro had a great run in the FedEx playoffs. But he did it at a perceived value salary range. Now Castro is priced up with the big boys. The touts are mainly positive about Castro and Vegas is still on board. He just seems too overpriced. And now the line movement is going the wrong way…

Middle Tier ($7.5K – $9K):

Jason Kokrak (18% pOwn%): The Kokrak got DQ’d in this event last year. Don’t know why and don’t care. What we care about is how well he finished the 2016-2016 PGA season. Touts are loving him and so does Vegas. He has the best odds in this salary range and when your salary neighbor is Chris Kirk, you always pick up a little extra ownership.

Hudson Swafford (15% pOwn%): We’ve always thought he had potential. Some touts have been clamoring for a Swafford Tour win for a while now. But it’s the cut-making that most DFS players are interested in here. Swafford has made the last 12 cuts, and in a field with so many unknown skill sets and motivation levels, proven cut-making ability is pretty cool.

Grayson Murray (7% pOwn% and rising): Alright, it’s time to dig into this brand new pack of 25 PGA golf darts. Wow, these darts feel pretty good. Nice grip, good heavy weight, and balanced. Last year’s pack had some good darts: Grillo, and Si-Woo. As of now, Grayson Murray is the trending pick for the best dart in this year’s pack. Can Murray do what Grillo did here last year? Of all the rooks, Vegas thinks Murray has the best chance.

Lower Tier ($6.7K – $7.5K):

Patrick Rodgers (10% pOwn%): This week’s line movement stud, Rodgers is also getting significant tout buzz. A trending boom-or-bust play, Rodgers is preferred over Swafford by those with a higher risk tolerance level. He didn’t finish last season well, but he did pop a T3 at the Travelers in August.

Ollie Schniederjans (5% pOwn% and rising): Another boom-or-bust rook that has mainly busted so far. He’s still regarded as one of the better darts of this year’s pack. He’s getting some tout buzz too, maybe the touts just like saying his name though.

Cheap Darts and Scrub Shop ($6.0K – $6.7K):

Trey Mullinax (7% pOwn%): Mullinax is the big bomber of the new pack. On the Web.com Tour, he was great at driving distance and GIR. But of course, he can’t putt. Maybe this putting concern is why Mullinax can’t crack 300/1 odds.

Aaron Wise (14% pOwn%): This Mackenzie Tour stud made a decent splash with a T16 at the John Deere in August. Aaron Wise and salary neighbor, Geoff Ogilvy, should rake in considerable ownership in this range from perpetual disappointments like Steven Bowditch (love the Bowditch tweets though, the Tiger blurb was awesome!) and unknowns like Dominic Bozzelli.

Updates will be made to the projected ownership table (below) later Wednesday night and a few hours before roster lock on Thursday.

Good luck this week Grinders!
