It was a bit of a sad day at Riviera Country Club. Tiger Woods had to withdraw, Justin Thomas couldn’t get anything going, Patrick Rodgers doubled his last hole to miss the cut on the number, and Jordan Spieth signed an incorrect scorecard. I have two thoughts on the Spieth thing. First, how does that happen? There are literally digital scoreboards on every hole, so he had to have known what his correct score was. And second, how is this still a rule in professional golf? Everyone knows the scores of the golfers- do we really need them to keep their own scores and then DQ them if they sign an incorrect card?
We typically see a tougher setup on the weekend, but there’s not much Riviera can do on Saturday. There’s very little wind in the forecast and it’s expected to rain. This will not be the firm and fast version of the course that we typically see. Given the conditions, I am leaning more toward the longer hitters. If there’s not as much roll out on drives, the course will play even longer.
