PGA Value Breakdown: Sony Open in Hawaii

Selecting the absolute best value out there is crucial to cruising to top of the leaderboards. PGA guru Josh “futureoffantasy” Culp dives into the player pool, picking out his favorite value options for the week’s tournament.

Sony Open in Hawaii

The first full-field event of the year will take place in Honolulu. The course here is Waialae Country Club, a par 70 course with bermudagrass greens.

Looking at similar courses should be a good idea this week since most of the courses on TOUR don’t fit the mold of Waialae Country Club. Most courses are now in the bomb-and-gouge style but this week’s venue requires more shot shaping and short-game skills.

Jason Dufner ($7,300 DK / $10,900 FD / $15,400 FDRFT)
When I ran the numbers to find correlated courses this week, I got Colonial, Harbour Town, TPC Boston, Firestone, and El Camaleon. Duff Daddy has a T2 in Boston and a pair of runner-up finishes at Colonial, as well. He’s added a T4 at Firestone to his resume. This is certainly a course style that could fit his play style since it’s more position-based, allowing him to shine on approach. The wildcard will be his putting but he gained nearly 5 strokes with the flat stick on last week’s slow bermuda greens (5th in the field). He has three top 20s in nine tried here at Wailalae. He ranks 15th in the field in weighted, long-term performance. Despite the strong performance last week and steady week-to-week play, there are 38 other golfers priced ahead of him on DK.
